I pulled up to Sunset at 9 am to a new face launching a Malibu Kayak rigged for fishing, Tim was his name, i introduced myself and told him about the two previous dismal days of fishing. I told him about NWKA and handed him a sticker, hopefully he will log on.

he launched and went north to fish the lighthouse.

Dave(goldendog),Justin(coastal pride) and royg(bluetrident) showed up shortly after and Wayne and Dale(not NWKA'ers) followed behind them.

Royg forgot his poles and had to go back home to get them. He was dragging his kayak tied to his truck to higher ground so it wouldn't get washed away but i didn't realize that. I was frantically waving my arms and yelling "your Kayak is still tied to your truck!!!". I pictured royg(mr tunnel vision) in his loud diesel truck just merrily driving down the road grinding his Yak to pieces....

We all pretty much launched at different times and fished different areas. The other guys went straight outside and i spent a couple hours fishing my way out there. My first fish was an underling, about 14 inches long. Caught a greenling next and by the time i found some of the others i had three decent blacks. Dave was paddling in from the bouy hole and had a limit of nice blacks stopped for a second to say his goodbyes and went in..

Royg and Justin decided to go north to the lighthouse and i was gonna follow in a few minutes but i hit on a hot little spot a caught 3 more nice blacks. I finally saw Wayne and Dale on there way back from simpson reef. They have electric motors on there Kayaks and can really cover some ground. Yea, i know, to each his own... Wayne did good, don't think Dale had much luck.

The NWKA boys all limited out or at least close to it. I released a bunch and had two nice ones, but not 17 1/2 flop off the hog trough back to were they came from...

The conditions were near perfect and the blacks were biting good. No keeper Lings were caught and only a couple underlings. Were pretty stumped about that, should be some big  ones in there right now and between all of use we covered alot of water.

It was a great day of fishing and pedaddling and i'm glad everyone caught fish. See Ya all next time...

Awesome day! Besides the Blacks, I caught a rather beautiful reddish colored fish, that at first I thought was a Cab. It was some sort of Sculpin, about 16 inches long, and after consulting Royg about it, I decided to release it. After dropping my squiddly back down, bam! the big Black became a future dinner. I should have taken a photo of the Sculpin, such a beauty!

I have to say, this couldn't have been a nicer day on the water! Absolutely beautiful!

Dave

PS And so the AOTY begins!

No Lings from those guys either. If it's halfway decent i'm gonna hit it tomorrow with Ralph. Might as well make it 7 days in a row on the Yak fishing...

Two days on the ocean, no dramamine, no seasickness!!..... :headbang:

After doing a little research, the red fish I caught could have been a Red Irish Lord. What do you think Brian?

Nice report guys.  Sorry you guys didn't get into any giant lings.  At least we have some potential AOTY points for the board.  A new potential member isn't bad either.

Goldendog, I suppose it could have been a red irish lord, or a red phase cabezon, or a variety of other sculpins.  I'd really need to see a picture of it to tell.

I put that fish name in the google and came up with this site:

Never seen this one before, lots of information, and specific to our region. Bookmark worthy for sure. The specie list is cool

Red Irish Lords have distinct scale "bands".  They also appear skinnier than cabezon.  I hate those bait stealing buggers when out halibut fishing.  How a fish that small can get hooked on a 16/0 circle hook is beyond me.
