Hello all.  I'm new to Kayak fishing.  My 16 year old son and I saw some YouTube videos and were Hooked.  Caught my first Yak fish a couple weeks ago, it was a 54 inch sturgeon!   Not a bad way to start out the experience.  Were currently gearing up for some ocean trips and waiting for better weather. Coming from Salem Or so plan on going out of PC and depoe bay the most.  Were also interested in entering the rock fish tournament in Depot Bay if possible.
FISH ON!!

Just a note of caution: were you in a zone where anglers can legally remove a 60" sturgeon from the water?

Sorry about that, but welcome to NWKA.
The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.

Welcome, but read the regulations. Delete that photo please.

Tinker, I don’t think it’s oversize nor should we attempt to educate someone on an intro post.

Welcome!  You and your son found the sport like may of us did- YouTube. It sounds like you are getting geared up for the ocean. If you need recommendations for dry suites wetsuit or which radio to buy, then use the search function on the home page as this website is full of useful information.

Glad you got into kayak fishjj in by and hope to see you on the water. I often fish depoe and PC so I am sure we will meet soon. I have a red Toyota Tacoma and am often in a yellow Hobie revo.

Our new forum member plainly stated that the sturgeon was 5', or 60". Is that not oversize?

If now is not the time to let them know they're running the risk of killing a big sturgeon and/or receiving a ticket by removing it from the water, when is the best time? The next time that they post such a picture, when they've removed yet another large sturgeon from the water, running those same risks? Frankly, if I were OP, I'd appreciate the heads up ASAP. And as someone who has a vested stake in our fisheries, I think that a heads up should be dispensed ASAP.

Another consideration: This post is viewable by the public. If we don't say anything here, consider how this picture might normalize the removal of oversized sturgeon from the water.

If you see something, say something. It's to the benefit of all involved.

Your absolutely right!  I should have been more careful on how I worded my post.    To be honest with you I didn't measure it, but I have caught a few sturgeon in my day and it was close but not an oversized.

I also know not to touch their gills.  That fish was picked up by the mouth and tail for a quick pic and gently released back to the water.  This one was oversized but as you can see was not removed from the water.
That day there was a jet sled next to us that was landing clearly oversized fish pulling them in the boat picking them up by the gills and throughing them back in the water.  I told them it was illegal to remove oversized and their gills are fragile and not to touch them.  They acted ignorant and stopped but I'm sure as soon as I left they went back at it.  Some people have no respect for nature.  I'm not one of those people!  I'm sorry for upsetting some of you fellow NWKA members.

Welcome! Like you and your son, I was first intrigued with kayak fishing via YouTube about 12 years ago. It's like a whole 'nother world apart from being stuck on the shore.

I fish Depoe Bay regularly for spring lingcod and summer salmon. We're bound to run into each other on the water or in the parking lot someday. I'm typically in an ivory dune Revo 13 with "Kayak City" plastered on the hull.

Welcome to the addiction! I live in Lebanon and I fish Depoe Bay every chance I get  I have an Ocean Kayak the same color as yours. Mine is a 4.3, not sure what size you have. Good luck!

Welcome. I've been at it 9 years and it never gets old, always an adventure. Still paddling my original Trident. Tight lines.

I think Depoe Bay and PC are the "home waters" to many of us on the board.  And if its not- most people on the board have fished there at least once- Thanks ORC!
