Just in time for the summer fun to start, I ended up getting rear ended while trailering my Tandem Island.  1st, off luckily no one got hurt in any of the 4 cars involved and all parties involved have valid insurance.  The trailer and kayak appear to both be total losses although insurance has not weighed in on that yet.   The trailer was so mashed up that it had to be towed and lucky enough the tow yard was a block and a half from West Coast Sailing who I bought the boat from.   I was able to get the boat out of the yard and take it over to them for evaluation.  They feel its beyond repair and I would tend to agree.  Now just to have the discussions with insurance on how to be made whole again...which I am sure will be fun.  Overall crappy situation (again, thankful noone was hurt), as we were just starting to take our 1 year old out on the boat.  She is too shifty/energetic to risk taking out on single so it puts us back on land for a bit this summer.     Dealer says hard to get boats now and may not be able to get into one until after summer (assuming insurance pays out by then).   Pics for clicks:

Sorry man, that's quite a bummer! Hope the situation sorts itself out. I'm glad everyone was uninjured.

Yeah its a downer...but it's just "stuff" not people so it can be replaced.

From what I can tell the main hull buckled at the nose from striking the winch stand and the rudder area collapsed such that the rudder pin took a chunk out of it.  West Coast indicated that the aka cross bars may have shifted a bit too or been shocked in a way that stretched the mounts as they thought the screws were a bit loose.

That sucks bro, I got a Jackson big tuna (tandem) but paddle only, hit me up if you want to take the little one out in that. No sidekicks but we could rig something up. Glad everyone came out ok.

Thanks for the offer! I got a hobie compass too so I can at least still get on the water. Just no wife and child joining.

Good to hear that nobody got injured and ended up in the Hospital sess pool risking infection of the beer virus.

The boat and trailer took a good beating and lost that battle.   :crybaby2:

As for insurance, it has to be done, but man can insurance be an uphill battle. Almost as bad as buying a car from a sketchy used car salesman.  Hopefully you can get the paying insurance company to write you a check for the full value of the loss of the Hobie and trailer, so you can get on with looking for a new toy.

Hobie Islands and Tandems do popup all over the country for sale (new and used), so keep your eyes open on Craigslist/Facebook, etc.

Yeah used ones pop up here and there.  The pool seems to be limited locally (at least was when I was shopping for this one back in 2017).   Florida and SE seaboard seems to have quite a few on the used market.

Insurance is going to be a nightmare.  Since there were multiple parties involved they are still trying to figure out who was to blame and take my claim.  Problem is the boat needs to be moved from the shop to somewhere for storage until they can figure this out.  I cant trailer it since its not safe to drive, which means finding another way or paying for a tow.  Hesitant to pay out of pocket since I don't have a commitment I would get reimbursed.   So much fun....

Glad you are OK. With the dollar amounts involved it might be worth it to speak to an attorney. If they know you have someone else on your side it may expedite things and they may think twice before trying to screw you.

Your country is more litigious so I don't want to be telling any tales out of school. If you do get cooperation with the other parties and insurance then lawyering up will just make them do the same and then you the whole thing will be longer and more expensive and painful. You do have a big claim so maybe it's pretty much required to get an attorney. You'll know best, just thought I'd throw in my .02.

I saw a new Tandem Island at Western Canoe Kayak in Abbotsford. If you brokered and shipped it down you might still save buying in CAD$. Might be worth looking into. Our dollar IS brutal.

Getting lawyers involved would be a very last resort for me.  Between time and costs it would have to go very south for me to want to go that route.

Thanks for the tip on the boat.  Not looking for a new boat until we figure out how much we are getting out $$ wise.  Sounds like west coast has a couple incoming boats that are not spoken for so could maybe get one of those if the settlement happens in time.

Anyone got a lawyer recommendation...It may be needed at this point given the amount of finger pointing going on.
