Hey Folks,
I am going to try to take another swing at making a decent YouTube channel. I know that I don't have a very good setup yet, but I am working on it.
I just purchased a video editing program today. (Filmora9)
I decided to start with an edit of a trip to Lake Billy Chinook from February.
Please check it out and send me some useful tips. Thank you!

I checked out some of your videos.  They are pretty good.  One thing I need to do is talk more while filming.  I like how some of you guys give a commentary while filming.  I usually just put music over mine.

As far as the video software, I use VSDC.  Its pretty powerful (at least for what I do) and best of all, its FREE

Anyways, I liked the videos and gave you a sub  :icon_thumleft:

Big grain of salt, here.  Huge.  Planetary size, in fact, because I'm just getting started in making and editing videos, too, but these are my comments.

Good storyline and that makes it a good video, but the head/hat/helmet mounts for an action camera seem to produce fishing videos that almost always make me seasick.  They seem to work fine for bicycling and skiing and other activities, but not so much fun to watch for fishing videos.  Maybe it's just me.  It usually is.

I use DaVinci Resolve for video/sound editing.  It's as powerful as Adobe Premiere, it produces excellent edits, it's complicated until you've tinkered with it for a while, it works on IOS or Windows, and it's free.

I used to do a few back in the day, nothing about fishing until more recently. And even now I doubt I will upload more than a couple times a year. But I record almost every trip! I found everyone has a little different style that they like to record. Someone like me who mostly just has family/friends watch it can get by with just some simple music over the whole thing. I prefer an over the shoulder or sideways shot. I made a couple of booms like this guy. Super easy and you can get some insanely customizable shots.

What are you hoping for in your Youtube channel? Do you want thousands of subs or more someday? looking to do it full time? Just messing around for fun like most of us do? depending on your end goals should dictate how you go about it. You are definitely on the right track! Nothing wrong with your vids now. the more interactive you are in your vids the more popular they'll be. Maybe mess around with different camera angles, get a couple more cameras if able and record from multiple angles at once if you want more footage. Editing is the hard part and takes the longest. I am lazy and just edit in the fun parts with simple transitions. But like I said I am new too :D I like how you actually talk in your videos. I need to start!

I could but I don't like how I sound when recorded.  I usually just cut out all the fluff and keep all the action shots and throw some music over it.  Bam! Done!  ;D

+1 on the boom stick versus head mount.  I've been using the same boom stick T Coastal mentions above, cheap to make and way more steady than a helmet cam.  I installed the Scotty mounts on both sides of my kayak so I can adjust the position as needed, especially when I'm fishing with someone else.

When I started out, I muted all of the voice and just did the music.  Got a few comments about the blasting music was a bit overpowering, so I toned it down, and now I'm talking during, adding commentary, giving tips.  I like to have a low playing music track in the background sometimes as well.

My videos aren't professional by any means, but they are getting a little better each time.  I use Hitfilm Express. It's free but has most of the features as the professional grade editors.  It takes a while to learn, but you will not outgrow it.

If you want to see the progression over a few years of time and 50ish videos later, have a look at my channel.

Ok, so with a boom mount, do you just have to reach up to hit record, or do you just hit go and edit down 4 or 5 hours of continuous recording?

I am sure it is a setting that I can change, but my camera shuts off after 15 minutes.

I am just in it for recreation. I don't have the boobs to get thousands of followers. Just kidding!

I appreciate the comments. Maybe after my next retirement I will even put more effort into it, or maybe I will be over it by then. Idk

I know when I watch a video, I want to learn from it as far as what they are using, or how they are fishing.

What brand and model camera do you have?

If Gopro, all of the models have wifi, and can be operated via the phone app or a waterproof remote.  On my older model Gopros the remote worked great as it's waterproof.  However, the battery life is only good for a few hours.

With the Hero 7 and 8, they are voice controlled.  I've upgraded to the 8 and now can tell the camera to turn on, start/stop recording, take a picture, turn off, etc.  It's pretty awesome.

I will take video periodically throughout my trips, and edit down what I don't want or need.

In this video I walk you through the cameras I use and the various booms and mounts. I continuously record because I want to catch the take downs and hook ups as that's what really excites anglers. Good luck on you endeavor. You def don't need "boobs" to be successful YouTuber if thats your goal but its also just fun to share your experience with friends or other members of the kayak fishing community.

I have the GoPro Hero 4.

That voice activated sounds awesome!

Voice activation is awesome, but so is the little remote controller - although it momentarily requires one of your hands to press the buttons.

Check the GoPro website periodically for their sales and trade-up deals.  They'll sometimes offer a deep discount on the HERO8 if you send them a digital camera of any type in any condition, and they put their cameras on sale every so often.

I got more than a little help and advice from some NWKA members on cameras and on how to design and build DIY camera booms that avoid the annoying"crotch shot" camera angle before uplandsandpiper uploaded his excellent video tutorial on how to deploy cameras for the best results and how he uses external power packs to keep his camera(s) recording.  Battery life is the Achilles' heel of action cameras...

I really want one of the go fish cameras also. Maybe I could do some sort of a split screen between the kayak and the lure or bait. I think that would be fun! Might be depressing.....

hey! Another fellow Youtuber here haha I just subscribed to your channel.

One of the biggest things i recommend will be a good Microphone. One of the most annoying things for a viewer is wind noise ect. Its not so bad during calm days but you will be glad you have one on a windy day. Your voice will be crisp and clear.

As for GOpro battery power this is one of the most annoying parts. I am able to record non stop for many 8 hours without turning the gopro off by just using a powerbank and USB. The problem with this is water damage. So I use moldable swimmers earplugs to cover up the exposed areas and it helps keep rain and water out of the main areas.

Now one of the most annoying things is sifting through all the footage you recorded and looking for all your hooksets and catches. which used to take me many hours. I figured out how to find those important parts within minutes. LOOPING MODE change your gopro camera setting to looping record setting to record and let it continuously record. As soon as you catch that fish and you release him back in the water, hit that record button once again. It will record the last 5 minutes of all your footage. It will capture that hookset  up to when you release it. If you're fishing for fish that require more then 5 minutes then u can change your looping settings to 10 or 15 minutes. Now you dont have to sift through hours of video and you only need one memory card.

If you like I can make a video of my set up for you to see.(EDIT* I forget to mention, turn on your comments. More interaction on your videos is always better, regardless of positive or negative feedback. Many like to ask what you're using, or rigs you're using. They are more likely to subscribe if they can communicate with you)
