I think the big group of islands is closer to PO than it is to the cape lighthouse.  There is good looking structure directly off the cape though.  Launch looks reasonably protected from the northwest swell but obviously PO is much better protected.

hmu if you're going to run out there, I'd be down.

not sure which islands you are referring to but Redfish Marine Reserve is located there at Redfish Rocks.  https://oregonmarinereserves.com/content/uploads/2016/02/RedfishRocks.pdf
"A venturesome minority will always be eager to get off on their own,
and no obstacle should be placed in their path;
let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sun burnt, stranded, drowned,
eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches -
that is the right and privilege of any free American."

The Port Orford Reef with many named rocks.  I've been on the beaches on both sides of the cape many times and most of the times I would say it's very sketchy. Maybe on the right day, though.

Redfish rocks are several miles south of Port Orford, they are the super obvious ones close to the coast down near Humbug Mountain.

Only someone with a death wish would try it.  Cape Blanco is where everything changes: weather, wind, waves, currents...  Plus you have two rivers dumping into the sea there, one north and one south, and truly, if you can manage to pass the tip of the cape, the ocean is always a sincere mess.

(The Port Orford commercial fleet doesn't even operate around that reef.)
The fish bite twice a day - just before we get here and right after we leave.

I've never seen it, this screen shot tells me all I need to know about that washing machine.
Sunset Bay, Baltimore Rock, and Simson Reef look flat in comparison.

True, true... but sometimes the line between adventure and insanity pretty much disappears.  :o

I’m crazy enough to do it. Has to be a severe calm day. We fish cape mendocino on the regular and it’s not much different.  Fishable maybe 20-30 days a year and you have to know what you’re doing.

We only have to look at your nom de guerre to understand that brash claim!   ;D

I used to run around the dock at Port Orford as a kid. It was a good place to see lots of fish and learn new cuss words. I recall seeing out-of-town scuba divers bring in some really big ling cod and snapper from the reef. I've never seen snapper that big since. This was 60's and 70's.
