Advice needed for a noob

What depths are trout and other species hanging out in the winter? Lake Washington is my go-to but I also want to try the Sound as well. Any advice? Still a newbie to PNW fishing and ocean fishing. I just want to get out there and have fun. Nothing crazy, just a good 'ol time fishing

I've been catching them on the surface at Detroit Kokanee fishing.

Lots of variables, depending on the time of day, fish, method of fishing, body of water and many others. Do you have a fish finder? That may help. Sometimes finding the structure (current, vegetation, obstruction, bait, birds, bottom type) is more important than focusing on the depth. Whatever you do, if you kayak fish in the winter, my advice would be to consider fishing with a buddy and/or have the safety preparations (prepare clothing and rescue practice for the potential of getting wet by flipping or otherwise) and planning, particularly if you venture into the ocean where tides, wind, currents, temps and other variables can be a bit unforgiven when you are learning.
