If you're talking about the one that forms the headwaters of the Mackenzie River, I've fished it from a canoe before. Cold, exceptionally clear water with lots of trout. Tough to catch at times though.

Hey Roy, according to my copy of "Fishing in Oregon", Clear Lake (assuming it's the one in the McKenzie watershed, there are a lot of Clear Lakes in Oregon) has a few species of trout it in... brook trout, cutthroat and planted rainbows.  Motor boats are prohibited :).

Yep, it's kind of long and narrow with a few inlets, including the spring that is the actual headwaters of the MacKenzie. They also have a little store at the launch and a few little cabins that can be rented. I kind of remember a small launch fee, but I really don't recall. It is true that no motors are allowed.

Jay

edit: they also have some row boats, canoes and kayaks (I believe) for rent

Another option for central OR meetup would be at Davis Lake for some kayak fly fishing.  I believe Davis Lake is fly fishing only, but I assume that means I can still troll woolly buggers with my fly rod.  Oh and Davis Lake has bass and trout.

I'll take a look at my "Fishing in Oregon" book tonight and find more potential centrally located lakes to try.

i added clear lake campground to the google map. i've only driven by it on my way to the east side. jay knows more about it than i do, having actually fished there. i'd like to give it a try. i've caught trout & white fish on almost every lake i've tried along the mckenzie corridor. i think they're probly all good.

Do you mean the  "fishig Oregon" book by Jim Yuskavitch? after you posted that i remembered that i have that book too. It's a pretty good book.

On Davis Lake, Do you have to use a fly rod, or just a fly?

If i drive that far I think i'd rather go to odell or crescent..

Guess Davis Lake is a bit farther for you.

I'm sure we can come up with some good mid-point lakes.  Until then Clear Lake sounds like it might be good.

Clear lake is 186 miles from Coos Bay, and 135 miles from Florence. Went there in the eighties. Exceptional water quality, very cold.

Okay, I've been playing with Google Maps.  I finally realized that centrally located has a lot to do with whether you're doing highway driving of crossing the coast range.

Dorena Lake is about 2.5 hours from both Portland and Coos Bay.
Cottage Grove Reservoir is also 2.5 hours from each
Odell is about 3.5 & 4 hours away from each respectively.

I'll figure out something.

It looks like the Fern Ridge Reservoir near Veneta has a Clear Lake Rd running past it.  Is the Fern Ridge Reservoir the lake you're talking about CBY?

yep, that's the one. I had the map on Sat. view and the name doesn't show up..duh!!

With a clear lake rd around it, one could assume it might be called clear lake....
