Depoe Bay Fishing.

I know someone has touched on this topic before, but I couldn't get the Search function to find me what I was looking for.

Anywho, is Depoe Bay a safe place to paddle out of on a good day, or is it still too rough with all the underlying rock structure out there?   Also, can we fish that area, or is it protected?   More importantly, is the fishing worth the paddle?

I haven't gone out at Depoe Bay yet but it's on the list.  Monitor VHF channel 80.  They "usually" announce entry and exit of the harbor and suggest a blast from an air horn just for safety.  I did check in at the Coast Guard station there and they were friendly and helpful.  Looks like a nice place to try.

I too am really interested in a Depoe Bay paddle.  I worked in Newport for two summers 1989-90 and lived in Depoe Bay for one of those.  The fire department provided me with lodging and a short walk to the bridge where I fished below off the rocks. 

I also fished the north end where a rope allowed access down to a rocky bench.  You can see the bench from the highway and it appears to be a sandstone type formation.  If I were in a yak I would make my way toward it.  Generally had the calmer water. 

This was a really great spot to fish- perch, cabezon, black rock, lot's of nice greenling, and occasionally a ling.

As far as heading out under the bridge and fishing the bay, there are some absolutely blue-bird days along the coast and this would just be a matter of hitting it right.

I know My Buddy is wanting to fish it and so do I.  We have been thinking about making a Yaquina Bay trip and hitting Depoe Bay if the sea allows safe access.
