Ralph wanted me to share his leader holder idea with you guys. Pretty smart. The picture pretty much speaks for itself. Save those old floss containers to hold your leader material. Nice and small to stick in your PFD pocket..

Good question. There's a reason why they make the spools so big and not hold so much line.

For my trout fizzion escapades, I crafted my leader holder out of some 1" ID PVC pipe.  I drilled 1/4" holes about 1/2" apart straight down from end to end.  After roughing up the PVC with some 120 grit sand paper, I stuck on some industrial strength velcro (loop).  Just stick the hooks through the hole, wrap the line around the PVC, and cover the hook area with another piece of velcro (hook).  After several years of use now, the velcro is still holding strong.  I can stick this in to my pocket and the hooks can't snag anything.

I also added a smaller hole to the end so I can hold a bare hook while getting line into the eye and the knot started.  It also allows me to pull the knot tight without sinking a hook into my finger.

The only other thing I may add is a junk of foam down the center so it floats.  I dropped one in the lake off my kayak and it sunk.  I was near shore, so it was easy to retrieve.

Nice work Insayn! I like that all the hook points are all hidden away and really secure. I've been using some pipe insulation like top of the image below.

Only problem with this method is after some abuse it does rip apart.

Zee, I tried that pipe insulation approach first, and had the same results as you describe.  Then while sitting there pinching off a grunt sculpture, it hit me on how I can do it different. PVC, velcro and a bunch a holes.   ;D

That's a great idea insayn. Lot's of good ideas are "formed", when your grunt scupturing... ;D...First time i heard it called that...

Ralph said there is a little memory with mono but not bad as it kinda springs back when you put it in the container and is not so tight on the small spool. He has since switched to power pro almost exclusively and it doesn't have that memory problem.

I believe Ralph is Roy's Luddite kayak fishing buddy.
