Nice article, Spot! My new boat (hopefully) will be a Chinook killer.

Quick question, Spot (or anyone else for that matter): In your article, you write of using three to six foot leaders. Is this because of using a kayak? Do you shorten leaders to make landing the fish more managable? Most guys I know on PBs were using around a 9' leader.

Another winner Spot.   Hopefully we get some water and we can all put some days on the river!

As to the leaders, I have seen the extra long leader believers and in my opinion anything more than 6-7 ft is just overkill.  Willy Springers are not leader shy in the least and the roll doesn't change much after 5 ish feet. My basic herring rig is a traditional  two hook set up on a four feet of leader then a beadchain then 2-3 feet  of leader then another beadchain  tied to braid then 2-4 beads and a slider for my weight.

I've got a fevah.  And the only prescription...is more willy springer.  MORE WILLY SPRINGER.  (Really just one would do.)

Thanks Guys!

Most of my PB buddies are like Pelagic in selecting leader length.  None of them fish with more than about 6' of leader.

It's a fine line between long enough to facilitate a good roll and too long to land a springer from a sitting position at water level.  Another consideration is deploying that much gear effectively from a paddled kayak.  Too much leader can easily equal tangled gear.  Personally, I go with between 5 and 6 feet.
