Fishing and activities around Klamath CA

My family and I will be spending Christmas in Klamath CA, and I was hoping some of you might have some recommendations for places to fish, hike etc..

I will not be bringing kayaks. Was wondering if there are any salmon or steelhead running currently in the area.

I attended Humboldt State, and already know about the lagoons, Fern Canyon, Trinidad, Patrick's point.....I hadn't gotten into salmon/steelhead fishing yet when I was in college.

I live in Gasquet. Gave the middle fork of the Smith about 2 hours today to no avail. Heard from a fisheries biologist friend that the fish counter down river has been recording around 50 fish a day last week. That got me excited.
If you want to go on a nice walk, Grove of the Titans is a nice impressive short walk. Howland Hill Road just before the Mill Creek bridge. HSU grad? Good on you. Me too.

Fishing-wise, you won't be missing out on much this time of year! Lower Klamath really hits its stride August-October. Swinging spoons and spinners at Blake's Riffle that time of year can yield a fun mixed bag of summer steelhead, halfpounders, and fall Chinook. The fish down there really like copper and brass blades.

During extreme drought periods, the lower river can be excellent fishing for winter steelhead. But most winters, the water's just too big down there and you need to get above the Trinity River confluence to find more manageable flows. The mid-Klamath stretch from Weitchpec up to Orleans can be another fun stretch of water to explore, and you'll most likely have most of it to yourself. That's a great stretch to teach someone how to fish for steelhead.

Klamath isn't known for producing big steelhead, but the sheer numbers (combined with the abundant halfpounders) can be incredible. Most of your Klamath adults are in the 3-8 pound range. Double-digit number days are common.
