Ocean Chinook retention closed March 15-May 15, 2023

Announcement is about mid-way down the page. FYI for anyone looking to fish ocean salmon between Cape Falcon and Humbug Mountain this spring.

no surprises in the options being considered by the PFMC for the summer seasons, looks like no ocean chinook retention off Oregon (south of Cape Falcon), about 100K in marked coho. Chinook open during the September 'any coho' season which makes sense as the CA fish should all be south of Humbug Mt. by that time.

it does make for an interesting summer salmon season- no wild chinook, no hatchery chinook, no wild coho...only clipped coho available to retain.   

on the other hand, I see they are considering a 2 halibut bag limit again...interesting.

I have spent many days trolling the ocean in hopes of a nook, have yet to get one, mostly caught wild coho. Guessing I'll probably get an ocean nook this year!

It's looking like we could have September available for ocean nooks, which can be a really good time for them nearshore. Otherwise, it's just a nice surprise hooking a fat nookie when trolling open water for coho in July. I only landed one off Depoe last season, but other seasons, I've landed a half dozen or more. Crossing my fingers for favorable nearshore conditions for catching a lot of hatchery coho from the kayak this year.

Doesn't look like California will have any salmon season at all in 2023.

assuming they adopt the recommendation to allow a halibut limit and regular bottom fishing limit (lingcod and rockfish) when both are open at all depths, sure makes that a tempting outing...
