Any one rebuild there own reels, or modify them?

I have done a lot of older Penn conventional reels, a couple of Diawa's, and some Abu Garcia's.  The Penn's have parts for days and the limit to what can be done is really up to you and your imagination.  I will try and post some of the reels I have built over the years.

Sure!
Lots of aftermarket stuff for the Daiwas and Abus.

Some of them were pretty good without modification, most of what I do is just salt prep. Alantani is a great resource.

I haven't done any modifications but I service my reels myself. I encourage people to get into it. There's few things more satisfying that resurrecting a reel you love back to better-than-new conditions.

Not trying to threadjack, but what does everyone prefer for lubrication? I've been a Reel Butter (Ardent) guy for a long time, but I'm open to suggestions.

Yamaha marine for all gearing/inner surfaces. I'll pack bearings in my salt-water only jigging/trolling reels too.
Corrosion-x for general purpose lubrication/bearings.
TSI 301 (or was it 321?) for my freshwater bass reels I want more performance out of.
Cals grease for drags.

Another Alantani disciple here lol

Nothing complicated.  I removed the level wind mechanism from a penn 320gti so I could cast further.

Same lubes/scenarios.

As a yakker, it helps to keep the shields in place, but use heavier lubes. Few of us are going to emphasize casting, and for jigging it's a no brainer, heavy lube.

For my shore fishing tackle it's the exact opposite.

I am an exception as I prefer the dry carbon drag feel (low startup), but that's it.

I do a lot of reel maintenance and service for conventional saltwater reels.  Not much for modding, but an occasional handle upgrade or changing drag stacks.  It's very rewarding to revive a corroded broken unusable reel and bring it back to fetching a big ling or salmon.  I like cals drag grease, yamalube, corrosion x, reelX.  Kroil is amazing for breaking stubborn parts free.

Oy, I don't even wanna think about what the interiors of mine look like after seeing this one. I know Paul takes better care of his gear than I do.
As of July 12th, I am, officially,  retired.
