New to the sport. Was wondering what areas are best and what gear is needed?

2008 NWKA Angler of the Year and Pacific City Tournament winner Mark "Spot" Veary recently wrote an article on the subject for Kayak Angler Online.

That should get you started.

Multnomah Channel is nice for kayak anglers, but the Columbia River is expected to have a really good return this year.

Almost forgot...Welcome to NWKA. Where are you located?  There are also some coastal river springer opportunities out there, but I know very little about them.

Welcome aboard!

Like bsteves said, the Columbia is supposed to have a really good run this year.  The Willamette season is expected to be fairly short (includes the M/C) but it's fishable all the way to the falls.  Clackamas will be open more and longer.  Thinking about checking out that fishery this year.  Sandy produces later in the year.

Most people troll herring early and switch to spinners later in the season when it warms up.

Dress for immersion and keep an eye out for shipping traffic on the Big C.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain
