Spring fishing on Odell

… or any of the Cascade lakes, really.

Is good thermal immersion protection a good idea, given the water temp? Or are there enough powerboats out there that you won’t die of hypothermia if you end up in the water?

Especially lakes like Odell, I would strongly suggest some type of immersion gear.  On Odell, the wind can kick up real quick and be brutal before you know it.

On the other hand, air temperatures in Central Oregon can get very warm this time of year.  I find that if it is in the 70s and sunny, it can get really warm wearing a drysuit.

The 120 rule is a good general guideline.  If the air temperature and the water temperature added together equal 120 or more, you are more likely ok to be without immersion gear.

One other factor is whether you are fishing alone or with a friend.  If you are alone, I would be more cautious.

Speaking from early season experience at Odell, I would suggest you wear immersion gear. The wind at this lake is generally pretty brutal after 10-11 AM ish give or take an hour during most times of the year. If you find the afternoon is smooth and warm, you might be OK without immersion gear. If you feel the wind kicking up I suggest erring on the side of caution, especially if you need to make your way against the waves back to the ramp. Tight lines!
