I don't use one while paddling, but I've started using one while fishing or trolling. I like being able to drop my paddle & grab my fishing pole without having to stash the paddle into a holder.

I use one because...

1.) It's a habit

and

2.) I fear loosing it while out on the water (although keeping a spare in my hull should counter much of that fear).

I also don't intentionally drop my paddle over the side or use a paddle holder while fishing, I'm more of a paddle in the lap at all times guy while I'm fishing.

I don't recall ever feeling like my paddle wasn't in my control.  I lay it on my lap.  I lay it to the front.  I clip it to the side.  But I don't use a leash.  I tried.  It was too restricting and the leash just got in the way.

This is my paddle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My paddle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I master my life. My paddle, without me, is useless. Without my paddle, I am useless.

I use a paddle leash because $15 is much cheaper than $125+ for an "emergency" paddle when my primary is blown or floats away.

Depends on your habits. I use a paddle leash and drop the paddle in the water when I fish. Just pick it up when I'm done. Doesn't get in the way. Don't have to stick the paddle under a bungee or in a holder. The paddle usuually stays right next to the boat and doesn't get in the way fighting fish.

But if I "grew up" sticking the paddle somewhere on the yak and it became a habit, would be the same.

blah blah blah,,, Without my paddle, I am a useless girly mon.

That's because you were a paddler first. Speaking for myself and guessing for the majority of kayakfisher's, we are only paddling to get to the fish. My leash clips to my deck line and generally stays behind me.
