Yes, you can use whatever video program.  But my point is that at the lower bitrates, your mileage may vary depending on which program you use.  So much so that the quality is not governed by whether you had 580 lines or 480 lines.

BTW, is you compare the pixel rate of NTSC 720x480 times 30 frames per second, to that of PAL 720x576 times 25 frames per second, you'll see that the pixel rate is the same.

720x480x30 = 10.368M pixels/sec
720x576x25 = 10.368M pixels/sec

You're trading off spacial resolution in the vertical direction for temporal resolution (more or less frames per sec).  Although one might argue that the temporal difference is not that significant.  For instance, film material (movies) typically come at 24 frames per second and are converted before display.

Well it sounds like you definately know what your talking about....lol
All I know is that it better get me the kind of stuff I want or I'll be bummed. In a month I'll be catching 40 lb salmon and I want to get it on camera. Also there are some whales that come in where I fish Halibut and rockfish. Thats goona be sweet. I hope I get decent quality for that kind of stuff. If I cant get it the way I want it on my software I'll get a hacker friend to get me Adobe 8 or whatever. I'll make her go....
Thanks for your help Allen. When do you think youll upgrade the site for mpegs? Ill make littel vids till then.
Thanks

Water Wolf QCI,

I've been editing my home videos on my PC for several years now and have used both Pinnacle Studio 8 and Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0.  Premiere Elements is the most stable and works best for me although you do need a fairly new PC to use it.  I have a Mini DV Cannon camera that I plug in to the firewire port on the PC to load the videos for editing.  I've only made DVD movies so far, but you can export your edited video to several WEB ready formats also. Either program in their current versions can be had for under $100.  Adobe Premiere Elements is made for beginners, but has all the power and features that I can handle.  Some of the programs that come with the cameras are pretty decent for free.

Sounds like the hands free video camera will be your biggest challenge  ;D  I have enough problems landing fish in my kayak without manipulating a camera  ;)  Good luck and let us see what you come up with.

WW, if it makes you feel any better, the 580 model you purchased has much better low light operation than the 480 model.  I've been doing some comparison shopping lately ...
