I found a couple hours after the Egg Hunt and before I had to fly out to Vegas so off I went.  Paddled out to the first spot and caught two nice ones but quick measurements showed both of them at 16 inches which is what I already have posted for AOTY.  After not hooking anything else I paddled to spot #2 where I met a bass boat we exchanged pleasantries and both stated that though we were catching nice Smallmouth we were not catching any giants.  Well I got blanked at spot #2 and the bassboat went to spot #3 so since I was starting to run out of time I paddled back to Spot #1 cause it's close to my takeout.  A few casts into my reworking of this spot I got bit and set the hook into the fish I was looking for.  She came right to the surface after she was hooked and let me see her which made me that much more nervous.  (I really like the AOTY as it makes every fish that much more fun)  When I got her to the yak I could see just how beautiful she was, BIG and FAT.  After landing her I secured her to the chain stringer for some measurements then let her go to hopefully make a whole bunch of new giants for later.  I didn't have a scale so not sure what she weighed but she went 20 inches on the button according to the paddle.  The pictures suck but here they are.

P.S. there are bigger out there but they are really few and far between

EObasser,

Nice fish.  Very smart to secure her before taking those photos.

By the way, you really ought to get a hawg trough.   Those measurements based on your paddle are a bit sloppy.  I mean I realize that that fish is probably 20", but your overview picture shows only 17" (yes I know the tail is bent, but you can see the issue).

Gotta love a system where a 13" bass scores nearly as much as a springer ;D  The fish was caught on a chartruase with copper flake Kalins 5" grub.  Seriously though that springer is most impressive.

I am going to do that.  Using the paddle is a pain in the a$$.  I promise the 20 inches is legit  that overview picture is lousy and the tail is hanging to the bottom of the footwell

Thanks basser!  Do mind if I ask how the grub was rigged?

Nice fish! We're looking at heading your direction this weekend (John Day area). Let me know if you're going to be around, we can finally do some fishing.

Pretty good sized smallmouth. People tell me there is pretty good bass fishing around here but hardly any takers because they are all fishing for salmon or steelhead.

I have heard around Rowena is real good but I have never fished it myself.

Are you planning to put in at LePage park?  If you need a extra I can probably make it out this weekend.  I will find out more when I talk to my wife (We just got in from Vegas last night and are both working today so I will see)

I hear it's good around there as well as some rocky places and structures right around the Hood River Bridge towards the Washington side. I may check it out this weekend.

Just about anywhere you go on the Columbia from Hood River East is good for small mouth.  Just checked the water temp and at 48 is still a bit cool but I am going to give it a try this weekend.  Wind turns Easterly tomorrow and should be glass by Sunday.

That's the general plan. Also talked about putting in off Helms Creek Rd a bit further upstream, guess there's good channel cat up that way. Either way, you're more than welcome to join us. We'll probably be there early afternoon on Saturday.

And the bass fishing's decent further west, too. Hector caught 2 more around sunset last night.

How about a Sunday get together for bass??? I don't know how to catch them but I'll be entertaining to watch.  ;)
