Espiga and I are planning on sticking around for a few days after the tournament.  Would there be any need to bring along some of our heavier gear (50-80 lb) to target some big halibut or lings?

Also curious if it might be worth bringing up a crab pot or two?

Looks like Espiga will be up there by Thursday afternoon and hoping to get in some fishing that night or for sure in the a.m. on Friday.

For the guys who went last year...any "must have items" that you wish you had brought last time?  I'd hate to get all the way up there and then find out I was missing some crucial item.

Looking forward to a great time!

See ya all up there!

Darren

Espiga,

You won't need big line for halibuts or lings.  I'd never use more than 40# line from a kayak any way.. it's way tough to get it to break while in a kayak seat.  We'll be about 20-25 miles from the open ocean and the lings will be smaller (like 5 to 15#) and I doubt if there are any halibut that deep into the sound by this time of year.  If you take a trip over to the open ocean, then everything will be different of course.

Whoops, no crabs to speak of either.  The river otters in the area keep them knocked down to where they aren't worth trying for, if you can find any at all.  Again... out to the open ocean.

It's not all bleak like that makes it sound.  I think you'll see that the kings will be there in droves, just like advertised.  What hasn't been mentioned though, is that you can literally catch your 100 fish limit of mackerel while standing at the fish cleaning station.  They congregate there to eat the salmon eggs and other small pieces.  I'm going to take a few and see how they taste.  I'll be using a fly rod with power bait balls that mimick salmon eggs.  I saw them taken with bare hooks last year.  That's how aggressive they are.

I contacted a few of you guys a few weeks ago to try to arrange carpooling to the event. Nothing worked out then... I still really want to come/go, and am considering making the drive by myself.... but would rather not! Less fun and more expensive!

Did any space open up for a carpool? Any single kayakers still considering? Email me at kuharicm@gmail.com or call me at 206-919-5624...

I could leave as early as Thursday evening, and just need to be back by Tuesday morning...

Polepole,

Sounds like one out of your foursome should jump on this chance.

We had one guy bail, which works out for us as fitting 4 was going to be tight.  One of the other guys had a situation come up and I'll know more tomorrow if he has to bail to.  If we are down to just Charles and I, then we'll probably have a spot.  Will let you know as soon as I know.

I had an evening casting job, tonight, so I'm way behind on my packing. I'll probably be lucky to get out of here at 7-8pm, too. It's 3 1/2 hours to the border, from here.

So far, I only have Tom coming with me, so if Matt can connect with him in Seattle, or me at the ferry line,  a ride the rest of the way is possible.

Thanks for the updates. Let me know if something might work out.

Tell Tom to contact me if we can meet up in Seattle... where I'm located.

And that birth certificate is suppose to be certified.  I'm still working to lay my hands on mine.

Matt,

I've called your number but haven't left a message.  I'll try again tonight after about 6pm.  Can we meet at my place in Bothell?  I'm real close to 196th street and Bothell Everett hwy.

My Bad!!  I'm wrong as can be.  Until the end of this year, you do NOT need anything more than a drivers license to get to Canadia by land or sea, just by air.  Check it out: http://www.gonorthwest.com/Visitor/planning/border/identification.htm

So T?  Any decisions on where to stay Thursday night.  I haven't had much chance to think about it, but I'm game for just about anything.

Last I recall, T suggested that we just crash on the lawn at the ferry landing. He says people do it all the time. ::)

Here's some info on bringing foods, etc., to Canada.

Polepole,

Yep.  Somehow both Pisco and Matt have bought the whole ferry line, lawn story.  That's where you'll find us on Thur. night.  I don't know what time they quit selling tickets but after that time you or we will have to wait in the line to buy tickets.  There's plenty of space there for napping.  They don't want you to set up camp of course, but you can sleep on the lawn near your car.  Then I'm pretty sure we'll be on that 5:45 to Nanaimo.
