Dave and Roy,
Good luck tomorrow. I hope you hit a hot bite!

Hey, how about Saturday the 13th? My son, Ryan, who finished his Marine Corps enlistment last October, is on a break from classes. We're thinking of heading down to Coos Bay on Friday. Last time I checked, the weather, while not great, didn't look too bad for Saturday. Anyone interested in hitting Sunset with us?

Anyone fishing Ten Mile Lakes for LM's or the Umpqua for SM's yet?

CBY, would it be cool for the both of us to crash at your place? I'll bring a couple sturgeon steaks for the grill.

Roy,

Awesome, we'll arrive sometime tomorrow! In fact, I just got off the phone with Ryan, and we're planning to leave here at O-dark-thirty (4:30 AM) to avoid the dreaded morning traffic in Everett, Seattle, and Tacoma.
If we drive straight through we'd roll in to Coos Bay around noon. I'm thinking though, that we should kill 2 or 3 hours fishing for smallies on the Umpqua. Do you, or does anyone else, have any advice about:
  • Where to put in (with only one vehicle, we'll have to be able to paddle back to the launch site.
  • How to fish for river smallmouth. Should we anchor up to fish each spot?
  • Safety concerns.

Google map Elkton or Scottsburg

As far as I know the only safety concern would be PB's.

Thanks for the info FS and RR. We'll give Scottsburg Park a looksee on our way through, and give it a shot if it looks doable.

Nice ling, Dave. Is it an upgrade? How'd you do today Roy (cby)?

Karl, the ling was an upgrade by an inch and three quarters. I also got a cab that was a 4 inch upgrade. Photos and story tomorrow. I am totally shagged out tonight! Too much fun!

I got a couple pics of daves cabs. I was off around the corner when he caught the Ling. I caught two Lings and a Black, daves got the pics of my fish... Was a great day all around, beautiful ocean conditions, hope it hangs in for Saturday.

You coming down I-5 Karl? You'll go right by Scottsburg Parkif you come across to the coast on hwy 38. If you come down the coast it's 21 miles up 38 to Scottsburg.

Ralph's never had Dino so if you don't mind bring a steak for him too..See ya tomorrow sometime.

See ya on the water..

I arrived at Sunset at 8am, and Roy was already unloaded and ready to go. The ocean was nice and flat, so we decided to go out to Baltimore rock and try for something big. Ralph had been fishing for a couple of hours, and he radioed that he had 3 blacks fishing on the south side. While paddling out to Baltimore, we stopped and fished a couple of places. Roy caught his first ling. I was getting a few bites, but was unable to hook up so we decided to head out offshore. Baltimore rock was good for me, and I caught my first and second Cabbie ever. I even caught a undecab. I also hooked a decent black. Roy caught another ling. The action seemed to slow down, so we paddled over to the point that the lighthouse is on. While fishing there, RevoRoy showed up in his Smoker and we fished together for a while. I caught a ling there. Nature was calling me so Roy and I paddled into the bay next to the lighthouse. There is a sandy spit that separates Sunset bay from the lighthouse bay, so I pulled my yak up on the beach and took a break while Roy continued fishing. It also gave me a chance to bleed my fish, as they were still alive in my goodie bag. I didn't want to do it offshore as I was being followed around by a couple of sealions. Roy and I fished the bay for a little while, and decided to call it quits. It was almost 1pm by then. We portaged our yaks across the spit to Sunset bay and called it a day, a great fishing day at that!
