I found out late last week that I needed to attend a meeting this morning at the Crater Lake Lodge.  So naturally my first thought was AOTY points.  I left home at 4 am yesterday and was on Diamond Lake by 9:30 am for some too easy trout points.  I caught three (and lost many more) before I called it a day.  They were all current stock 13 to 14 inchers - not the holdover 22 inchers I was hoping for - but worth a few points anyway.  And the lake is beautiful and very fishy after its well-known battle with invasive fish.  Then I hit the lower Umpqua on my way home today to try for bass.  Fishing was slow but I managed a very small - smallmouth.  One I hope to replace this summer on my AOTY board - but I'll post it for now.  It was great to fish new places and catch first-time species for me from kayak.  Not bad for a business trip.  Gee - thanks AOTY.

Nice report DC.

Well Done!

They hit almost anything.  I had good luck trolling a kastmaster and woolly bugger.  And also got hit on the rainbow powerbait while I was anchored for lunch.  There was some kind of hatch going on too and fly fisherman from their boats were nailing fish after fish.   You definitely needed a boat because the fish were a few hundred yards offshore.  I read they are going to keep increasing the stock each year because of the massive food sources for the fish, so the lake should just keep getting better.

Diamond Lake is fun.  Next time you'll get a ten pounder.
