That is Hiouchi. Fish was 48.5" X 29". 48.6# on the digital scale; 47+ on the Hiouchi scale about 2 hours later.

LOVE the Smith! Any tips on how to fish it from a yak are greatly appreciated.

Not a yak fish so it probably doesn't count.

How can a nice big fish like that NOT count?  I love looking at big fish pics no matter where/how they were caught.  Keep 'em coming!!!

Hmmm ... the Smith, I've always wanted to fish that river.

There are two members on NCKA, both guides, who have done quite a bit of work on learning to fish the Smith from the yak:  SBD out of Ukiah, and Swellrider out of Eureka - Great White Kayak Co. and Humboats, respectively.  There's nothing easy about catching a fish up there.

I cut my teeth on the Smith with John and Tom from Pro Sports in Eureka when I worked there. I've got a couple money holes that are super easy for yak fishing. Hell of alot easier to get them there than the coloumbia...at least for me.

I've been trying to get back for the September slaughter & would love to split gas if anyone is interested driving down from PDX.

The last time I was there, I fished the mouth two hours before low tide, just letting kastmasters float down stream and I swear we hooked up every third or fourth cast....hooking them was easy, landing them proved much more chalenging. big fish + big current + tide = big tow into the breakers.

I stay at the Ship-Ashore every year when I go up there. Can't get much closer to the mouth than that.

PM me whenever you can get some folks together and I'll drive up. I'd love to meet some people from up in God's country.

good ol' ship-a-shore. I will PM you when I get it together. May just be me and the GF. I've usually just camped at Jed Smith and driven over to the mouth.

If you've been on the bank in the combat zone at the mouth in the last 5 years, we've probably fished shoulder to shoulder :)

Note the goofy expression.....  That's what happens when trying to lift a 40+lb chinook immediately after fighting the beast to the net.  Jeff and Brian will probably recognize the hole I was fishing.

That's a funny looking kayak you're standing in Mark.  Nice fish!
