Last year my gf and me spent like $400 at Rack Attack, got cross bars, towers, ect for her Forester.  I was always having to arrange using her car, or taking her fishing with me.  After going through all that last year I wanted a rack for my car, but couldn't justify (or afford) to drop another 400 (or $450 with locks) on another rack system.

I found ReRack on CL and ended up sending emails back and fourth.   They didn't have my exact fit kit for my car, they said they could shave down some pads and it would be a good fit.  I called around and scored on the exact fit kit for my car from Joes for like $25 (going out of store clearance).  Brought those to  ReRack and got base towers, crossbar, and locks for 168$ (installed).. So $213 for a like new condition roof rack.

I wanted to wait a while to make sure everything was good-to-go before I posted.  So far 10 trips out with the kayak(s) on, with no problems-Sold. It's all Thule.  I need to get a pic with both yaks loaded up on my protege, it's like the little engine that could.

Anyways great customer service and awesome deals...

Hmm, I really need to get a rack for my truck but I hate spending lots of money.  Maybe I'll give them a call.

Anyone else know of a cheap way to put some basic cross bars on my old truck cap?  It doesn't have to look pretty, just functional.

Ya, doesn't hurt to give them a call tell them what you have and what your looking for...

If memory serves correct they have three price points, functional, decent, and like-new.  My set up was the like new, so i'm sure there are some real deals to be had for the functional method.   They are cool guys, Bo and Ken will hook you up.

Brian, both Yakima and Thule used to make bolt-on artificial rain gutters that were long enough to attach a rack to. I wouldn't be surprised if they still do. This is the most common way I've seen truck canopies and gutterless VW campers accept racks.

I know what you mean by spending tons of money on just a rack.  I wandered around REI, and Joes (when they were still in business) for hours contemplating my options for my Tacoma.  I didn't want to put my canopy back on just to mount a rack to, and this truck doesn't have rain gutters on the cab.   Scrounged around my garage, and found what I needed to fab the rack I have now.  Works awesome on the cheap.

You may want to look at garage sales.  I have seen the older styles for sale on occasion.

Another option may be something from JC Whitney.

B, I dunno man. It's just not right. Racks? If you didn't have hose foam brix on top of the truck it just wouldn't be the same.  :-[

Crap, I wish I would've know you were looking for some PSR.  I have two racks sitting in my garage and three different mounting systems... one thule raingutter style, one yakima factory side rail style, and one yakima raingutter style.  No spare saddles, mounts/bars only.

If anyone is looking for these lemme know.  I've just got them laying in the garage from past vehicles.  I can tell you that they have been fitted on a Mini Cooper, Landcruiser, & Jeep Liberty.

I might have to bring them with me next time I pass through Portland and trade them for a second set of saddles if nobody takes them off my hands before then.

Well, I've used my $50 set of temporary kayak pads and straps for about 6 years now and I've probably put well over 10000 miles on them.   They're designed for trips less then 50 miles and speeds up to 50 mph, but I can attest that they work fine on trips up to 700 miles and at speeds up to 70 mph.

They tell you that so think of them as temporary and come back later for the "whole enchilada rack".  Now they've got you for two racks...

And, I know this one guy that successfully used his foam brick as a backrest when he forgot his kayak seat.    ;)

Yeap, you can't do that with a Thule or Yakima saddle.
