I'm going to be kayaking in the general area of Cyprus Isl July 9-12. Anyone have any tips for some fishing action? Bottom fish? Rocks, kelp, sand. What's worth trying for?

I'm guiding clients, so fishing time will be limited. I was hoping to only bring hand lines and jig soft plastics during our few moments of free time.

I took bait last year and got hammered by dogfish.......

Thanks for any info!

Why hand line? Bring a two piece rod and store it below deck. It'll make fishing a lot funner. Try 2 oz. leadheads  w/ plastics. Scampis, grubs, swimbaits in natural colors should get you rockfish.. and no dogfish. They hate plastic. Don't forget to check the regs. They're tricky up this way.

Well, I'm guiding a 4 day sea kayak trip, boats are filled to their brim with food/water/gear/tents/pot/pans etc.

plus, if I have to do a rescue or tow or whatever, a hand line is not going to get in the way of doing my job like dragging a boat across the deck during a t-rescue, but rods on the deck would jeopardize my quick response etc and get in the way.

Afterall, I'm working, hoping to fish a little, as apposed to doing a personal fishing or kayak trip.

Just looking for some advice on what to use and what to target. But i guess I'll just wing it ;)

I think just about any "wiggly" plastic will land you some greenling or a rockfish.

Gets me thinking ... if you were to choose one all around lure (not bait) good for a variety of species and fishing options, what would it be?  I suppose in the NW, the buzz bomb would be right up there.  Jig it, troll it, cast it.  Catches just about everything swimming the NW waters.  Lately I've been using a 4 ounce krocodile spoon.  I had a stash of them and am now down to 1.  The largest size can find these days is 3 1/4 oz.   You can jig it like an iron or troll it when traveling.  I've caught just about everything on a krocodile.  A swimbait would be on my list too.

  >:D reeeaaaaly >:D very interesting.

Bait is hard for me to deal with on these trips. Herring has typically gone sour, and everything in the yak smells awful. Would trolling a spinner be worthwhile you think?

Buzzbomb was kinda what I was thinking. Another guy and I were discussing it's versatility earlier today. I just discovered it last year and it worked well for Nehalem coho.

you need to troll deep for salmon (40'+) so without a rod or more hardware i think your best bet would be buzz bombs or all the similar jigs in white, pink or black...be sure to replace the hooks with single SS siwash hooks and get rid of the treble hooks...treble hooks are not legal legal for salmon fishing

so, along with the heavy duty handline, add a couple keel sinkers and some barbless jigheads, a package or tub of berkely saltwater power swimmmers,  a few good quality 2 & 3 way swivels, some medium weight flourocarbon leader material, avoid the toxic areas by checking ahead of time, and go fish.

just remember to take pics..

which reminds me.. found the camera charger yet?
