No problem D. Glad you like the flag.

I had a good day and pulled up 11 dungeness crabs. They were all well over the the size limit so sorted through and 5 ended up being nice chunky males. So there was my limit for the day! Another night of all you can eat crab and WAF to boot.

I pulled yesterday morning (Friday) and found the deep trap empty (75'), but the shallow one (50') had 4 big girls, 2 males with one keeper.  Rebaited and dropped them back down.  I think they had drifted with the tides and wind.  More weight next time.  Pulling them up later today.

Zee, how big is that trap?  Do you drop two?

has anyone ever tried crab snares? I saw these at Cabella's and they were cheap ($4) and nice and small and easy to transport on a 'yak. seemed like a good solution for a tiny boat but i don't know how effective they really are.

Bobby

I have used these traps not on a Kayak but while fishing off the jetty at Cape Disappointment WA. I caught 5 keepers the first time I ever used them. You can use fish or chicken for bait I used chicken thighs, they tend to hold up longer. You can feel a little tapping much like a fish, then you pull on you rod like your setting a hook and reel as fast as you can so that the lasso snares stay tight around the crabs legs. It's more work then with pots and takes longer to limit out.

I second that!  Great job on the crab pull video!

thanks CLSwift!  i think i'll grab one and toos it in the 'yak and try it out. for only a few bucks, i guess i can't go too wrong.  i'm more into fishing than crabbing so i'd rather get too much wrapped up in the crabbing aspect.  thanks again.

My only concern with the crab snare on a kayak is that it might be hard to keep it in the same place for long enough to have a crab find it.   Unless you are well anchored you'll probably drift a bit with the current and wind and the crab snare will follow you.   From a jetty or dock this isn't an issue and the snare stays put.

Personally I would get a Danielson trap which are often on sale at BiMart for $14.  Add some crab line and a buoy and you're all set.  If you watch Zee's video this is what he's using.

I agree with Brian.  A nice thing about the Danielson traps is that you can collapse it and lash it down for surf entry/exit.

This is how I deal with the rope and the float.  For ocean crabbing you may need as much as 100ft, this allows you to control the "mess".   Its easy to connect and disconnect the rope from the trap on the water using the loop at the end. To set your gear,  Spool the pot to the bottom... give it an extra 15- 20ft so the swell won't "walk" your pots.. then throw a couple of half hitches over the rope left on the float, snub them tight  and you are good to go.  I also clip a long line snap with a 8 oz weight  onto the line about 30ft under the float to keep any extra rope off the surface.

The Danielson traps are virgins no more.  Pulled up 24 dungies in two traps, 11 and 13.  8 females, 15 of the males were keepers, and kept the largest 5.  Largest is 8" and I named him "Dinner".

And Zee, thanks for the home page crabbing video.  Used side saddle and line easily drops into water on the other side of boat.

Off to Bush Point!
