I don't think it is a mod only feature, at least it shouldn't be.  You can link to a pdf by clicking on the pdf logo thingy in the composer window and putting the link between the pdf BBC tags.

Did you try just attaching it?  I'm not sure what the system does with that.  Try it.   ;D
