Anyone ever tried sailing their yak with one of them simple "V" sails that are out there?

Looks like a blast.

I got to thinking that on a few occasions it would come in handy to get a "free" ride at one point or another to or from fishing grounds.  I have a very simple design in mind that I may slap together and play around Hagg Lake with some time, but other projects and fishing excursions could very easily get in the way of progress with this.  ;D

i had thought about something like that but didn't like the idea of installing a holder for a mast so i asked a buddy of mine if i could borrow his kite for kiteboarding.  i haven't had a chance to try it out yet but hopefully soon.  the kite is steerable and with a rudder that would mean i don't have to go exactly the same direction as the wind too.  with the high pressure and air stagnation in the Puget Sound area predicted to last for a week or so, i don't think i'll get much of a chance to try it for a while.

Pacific Action sail worked really good on the t140. On these small coastal lakes the wind changes direction a lot,, but on bigger water was good.. They stow and set quickley and are not in the way on deck.. With my Hobie it is in the way of peddles when stowed, so,, it's for sale.

I haven't been around forum for a while.  I certainly enjoy reading about your sport.
I don't have the funds to buy much so I will sit and read about your exploits on this forum.  Thanks for letting me hang.

I've used the WindPaddle sails a few times, and they're a lot of fun. Longest sail was about 13 miles last spring. Still hoping to do Stevenson to Hood River sometime this summer...

I've been really looking at those Windpaddle sails. Would loved to have had one on Timothy on Saturday. Did you use them on your SOT or your SIKs? Worth the price of admission?

I built and sailed one a while back and it worked pretty well. It was a variation on a vee sail I saw on somebodies New Zealand website and then I revisited it a couple of years ago to try on the Hobie Big A. Simple and cheap (just my style!)

http://home.clear.net.nz/pages/grantglazer/kayak/Hintssail.htm

It worked especially well on the Hobie on Timothy lake. I could even point a bit with the drive sort of acting like a centerboard. It stowed on deck and deployed with a bungee attached at the bow. The mast attachments needed work and it got relegated to the pile of other "roundtuit" projects on the side of the house.

Think I'll pull it out again and give it another shot and post some pics. Actually, I gotta build another one as that first one did not make it to FL.

If you want to sail your yak without paddling (or pedaling, for you Hobie folks) check out the Kayak Sailor at http://www.kayaksailor.com/default.htm  This company is making an awesome sailing rig that works on SOT kayaks and allows you to sail upwind or down ... and it should be very applicable to yak fishing.   I sold him a couple of my demo yaks last year to test the Kayak Sailor on.  Attached is an image clipped from their site showing a T13 sailing.

And NO, I am not in any way connected with this product or the company ... it's just as a sailor myself, I thought this was the coolest sailing rig I've ever seen for a kayak ... and over 25 years I've seen a lot of them.

That being said, I haven't gotten my hands on one to test yet.  If someone does buy one, please write a review and post it here.

Cheers!

I've only used them with siks so far, but have seen them rigged to sots. I'll get around to playing with it on a sot one of these days. Anyway, I had a blast with it, and definitely think it's worth the cost.
