angela and i are heading up to bush pt tomorrow - wondering if anyone has any tips and tricks for us, related to fishing that area...never even been there and won't be getting in until after dark tonite - not sure if i can do any recon at night?

I have fished from the point and along the beach often.  Once from a kayak during the most benign tides of the month.  I'll not be using the yak there again any time soon.  With the 12+ tidal changes we are currently seeing, I'd be very, very careful.

If you are fishing from shore, then buzz bombs and smaller jigs work.  If you are after pinks you need not cast far.  I watched a guy haul in a limit two years ago (4) in about 30 minutes with a small, pink yarn jig on a spinning rig.  I've caught both pinks and smaller kings from the point using buzz bombs and crippled herring jigs.  Lost a bit of gear there too.  I have access to the point through a good bud who transplanted his parents there.  Their house is not on the water.  Some of those folks who are on the water are cool about you fishing in front of their homes, some are real assholes.  Be polite.  Fish are commonly caught from the point northward past the pier.  I do hear they are on now.

I stayed south of the point, and I am no expert.  I've stood at the point on many occasions and seen 2 foot high standing waves 50 yards out.  Even in the benign tides we paddled in, if I had to fight a fish for any length of time, there was a chance I would have been swept around the point.  It was a distracting, annoying factor one had to always keep in mind.  A few times I remember actually hoping I would not hook up.  True, I was not sticking particularly close to shore, and the flow is much lessened in the bays and the flow reversed.  I would target the time around the slack.

It was a bit beyond my comfort level at this point in my experience.  I suspect if I had been swept around the point, I could have remained upright, and the hassle/embarrassment would just have been the pickup on the other side.

I went over there on Sunday and had a blast.  I'd fished it from shore many times but this was my first time on a yak.  The tide and wind were tough for a while but the embayment creates a reasonable hiding place so it wasn't really a problem.  There was a really quick rip just outside though so I can see how one could get taken for a ride in a heartbeat.  As far as a scouting report, I'd say this place is safe enough.  You can put in either at bush point or lagoon point (note:  I haven't confirmed the put-in at lagoon point) and paddle into the current to get a good drift back.  It's a long embayment so plenty of room to roam and get away from the PBs.
