First off I would like to thank everyone for the fishing tips. It odviously helped.

I got to Point no point last night after a short trip to Wally World for some added gear. I got the boat in the water through the normal combat fishing line and braved all the flying lead till I got out to a safe distance. On my way out casually asked howed things have been, and the reply wasnt good. I was a little bumed but maybe things would turn around. So I was alittle later than I wanted and didnt have time to rerig so I thought I would just Jig the Litle white and pink buzz bomb I had. I was in about 30 feet of water and watched the occasial fish jump, and a few scattered schools in the fish finder. So I drop it in let it hit the bottom real it in so Im like 10 feet from the bottom. I think the second time it fell bam fish on, I was estatic. It felt a little light to be a Salmon and it wasnt. It was about a 1.5 pound Pacific Cod(Still was fun). So I threw it back and kept going. Not 5 minutes later I got another hit, this time it was alot bigger. After about 10 min I had my first Salmon at the boat ready to be pulled in. I was reaching around for my net and the boat tipped a little at the same time the salmon came back to life and made a run for it. Need less to say I almost went swimming and he got away. I caught a grand total of 17 fish from 6:45 till about 8:30 when I quit all on this little buzz bomb. Mostly Ling cod, Pacific cod, and sole. I caught one other salmon and he got away at the boat as well. I tried to lift him in the boat and not screw around with my net, the second he left the water he did a couple of flips and away he went.

Do you all use a net, or how do ou land them.

All in all a great time even if the freezer doesnt so it.

Congrats on the fun outing

I normally grab my net right at the start of the fight - right after the strike and if I am sure I have a good hookset I'll turn, reach back with my left hand, grab the net and tuck it under my left thigh - rod is in right hand, reel is left hand retrieve.  I'm using an  8'6" rod - I'll reel in slack, and grab for the net while lifting the rod tip.  Haven't tried it on a salmon yet, but it has worked for all of the other fish that I have caught, and I bring most aboard with the net.

Sounds like an awesome time!  Ya gotta love it when the action is hot and heavy like that.  Landing hot fish on a barbless hook can be a challenge.  You might want to figure out how to have your net at the ready.  Keep at it and you'll have one in the freezer in no time.   8)

Net defiantly. A lot of times I just tuck the handle under a leg with the net laying up near the bow. Other times I just pick an opportune moment to grab it from a flush mount just behind the seat.

Sounds like a great time! You are going to be suffering from a while other curse now!
As for landing fish, so far it seems like right at the boat is the easiest time to lose them. I try and remember to take my time at the last bit and not rush things. Also if I'm not sitting side saddle when I hook up I'll swing my legs over the side as soon as possible. I think it makes fighting the fish and reaching for the net much easier.

Congrats!  You hit some hot action.  Good job.

I use a net, which I keep in the flush mount behind me.  I just grab it as the fish is approaching the boat, put it in the water and guide it head first into the net.  It seems salmon get frantic when they see the net, so be prepared.  Also it may be easier to "choke up" on the rod, grabbing it above the butt and pinning the line under your hand.  You can then have the butt on the bottom of the boat and lever the rod up.  I'm still finding it a challenge to manage the net and rod/fish simultaneously, and I've only landed little fish.  My guess is that a 15 pounder or more is a whole different ball game than a 5 pounder.  Still, I'd love to play that game!
