Hey guys, i'm a new kayak fisherman looking for a group of nice guys to go fishing with. I live in Southwest Washington, and my normal fishing spot is the Lewis River. I have only been out with the kayak a few times cause I didn't have anyone to go with. I am pretty much all set up and ready to go. It would be great to get together with a few guys who know what they're doing.

My setup:

Heritage Redfish 12'
25' Grapnel Anchor
Trolley System
Scotty Rod Holder
Flush mount holder

Nice rig!

Your in the right place and these days you should not have any problem finding company. Yak fishin has finally been discovered in the great Pacific Northwest!

I made a post similar to yours in 2001 on the ifish board and folks just looked at me like I had three heads. Now you should be able to find plenty of 3 headed company. ;D

Its a bit of a ride to your south, but you should really try to make it to the ORC next weekend in Depot Bay. It will be a great time to swap lies and hookup with some great Pacific Northwest kayak fishers. More importantly you can gain from some seasoned kayak fisher folks experience and shorten your learning curve tremendously. Yak fishing in that region up there* has a few quirks and idiotsyncracies <sic> that are best and most easily learned from somebody who's done it at least once (and I'm sure bsteves et al would not mind adding the Lewis to thier repertoire) ;D

Good luck and tight lines,

Wali

Hey Wali, the ORC next weekend sounds like it would be a blast. Though I know nothing about rockfish fishing =( I am pretty much a salmon fisherman but I am open for something new!

From doing a little reading, people are using shrimp flies and anchovies? Is that correct? I also read that people use jigs and working the bottom rocks with them?

Can you direct me to a good website that shows how to rig up for bait and/or jigs? or can I find this on one of the NWKA forums?

Lastley, Regs?? I don't fish Oregon, so I don't know the regs?

I hate to ask so many questions but rockfishing is not my area.

Thanks again!!

Get a day license (Fred Meyer is good for odd hours)

http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources/licenses/sport_fishing.asp

Get some 1 to 3 oz jig heads

Get some 5-9" white curly tail grubs

Get fishin!

Any 6-8' Salmon stick and anything like an Abu 5600 would do nicely. I really like 30# braid with a long leader/top shot (~15 yards) of 18# mono or Flourocarbon. I don't think anybody really uses bait for Rockfish, but I could be wrong. :dontknow: This is just my basic "go almost anywhere and fish for almost anything" rig. YMMV There is lots of other stuff that works great, but that rig has worked for me pretty consistently. Search "pacific city" and "rockfish" on this site for more and better ideas.

Hey Wali, thanks for the info!

Just one more question, at what depth do people fish out there?
