Hey I would like to do some reading when the winter weather won’t let me out! Anyone have any suggestions?
Books on Gear, Tackle, Fishing/Camping Locations in Washington/Oregon. Anything that’s fishing or kayaking related would be great!

Thanks,

DS

Paddle routes of the Pacific Northwest.  It's a good one and can be found at Barnes & Noble.  If you have a good used book store probably could pick one up on the cheap, it's been out for years.  It gives all the info on float time, difficulty, camping etc.

Yeah, that's a great book but there is little mention of fishing.

Kayak Fishing: The Ultimate Guide. By Scott Null and Joel McBride
Kayak Fishing: The Complete Guide. By Cory "Ruthless" Routh

we have them in stock, and most other shops should have them as well. I've read sections of each, and both are well-written & enjoyable.

I like "Sea Kayaker's Deep Trouble", "On Celtic Tides".....I like more narrative. I'll look on the shelf and get a better list for you.

BTW, anyone have any idea when the new edition is due out for the Oregon one by chance?

A very informative book I recently read was the owners manual for my fish finder.  Usually, I am not one that reads instructions, but it actually was very interesting.  Prior to reading, I just looked at depth, contour and for those little fishy things. I didn't realize how much those little things could do besides that. :)

I currently do not own the book, but I have had a few recommendations for Soggy Sneakers: A Paddler's Guide to Oregon Rivers.

Some of the ones I either have or have checked out from the library waaaay too many times that I recommend are:
Oregon River Maps & Fishing Guide(Frank Amato Publications)
Fishing In Oregon 10th edition
Illustrated Rigging for Salmon - Steelhead - Trout by Robert Campbell
Geoff Wilson's Complete Book of Knots & Rigs
Jig Fishing Steelhead & Salmon by Dave Vedder (Frank Amato Publications)

Frank Amato Publications has put out an extensive list of books on fishing in the PNW so check them out.
I highly recommend looking into your local library. When I first moved up here, I only had half the year left so I didn't want to fork up the money for a license when I didn't have a clue what I was doing. So I spent that half of the year doing my homework with books from the library and that helped me out a lot.  :read2:
You may be surprised how many books they have in the fishing section!  ;)

Also, since you're somewhat close to the downtown area, consider swinging into Powells City Of Books sometime if you haven't already. They have a nice selection of fishing books and paddling books.

I have Kayak Angling (complete guide) by Corey Routh, I think it is probably the best so far for Kayak fishing how to.  It does not offer much in tactics for the Pacific Northwest angler, other than bass tactics.  The rigging and equipment information alone is worth it.

That's what we need, a Kayak Angling and Survival Guide for the Pacific Northwest.  Hey, Discovery channel is calling and they need a new show.

Has anyone read Rick Steber's book New York to Nome?  He is a local neighbor who wrote a book (one of many books) about two guys on a canoe voyage.  It's a good one! When I was into o-night canoe trips offered some adventure reading during the winter snow-I-won't-go season.

That's an idea I've been kicking around, seeing as how I'll possibly have lots of extra time on my hands after the 1st of the year.   ::)

I thought the same thing several times over the last few years but decided sometimes the magic is best left in the box for each to discover on their own.  Part of the process and all...  Would be kind of like giving kids a map to the eggs on Easter morning...  Its should be a journey, not a recipe ;D
