I've been seeing some pretty interesting and similar setups on Texas Kayak Fishing too.

Saw Sonstorms setup and decided to make myself something like that. So I made a trip to Home Depot and got some PVC pipes and fittings and made this. Thanks Sonstorm for the pictures of your setup. It helped a lot. This setup makes the rods spread more apart from each other. When trolling with 2 rods in the stock mounts, I feel like the lines are too close together. The stock mounts don't have enough angle IMO ;)

Thanks!

I was looking into getting the Scotty (articulated?) rod holder to use in one of my rear flush mounts to place the rod further foward and into my peripheral vision, but I wonder if you can get the same amount of articulation with pvc out of a single flush mount without the supporting crossbeam?

Interesting but I still don't understand trolling with your rods behind you. How are you going to tell if there's some salad or other junk on you lure/bait? How are you going to tell if something's nipping at your lure/bait? Do you really want to do a near 180 twist just to get your rod out of the holder? Even if that's all good chances are by the time you put the paddle down and the rod was in your hand you'd have a ton of slack line.

wont mention who i AH i talked to about that, but we both agreed it wasn't something we'd try, mainly for the same reason as Zee stated.

she also mentioned that it seemed it would be more dangerous in a huli situation. and i can  see her point.

much more like the OEX roll cage on that camo malibu  ;D

My new rod makes it easy to know when I have something on the line. It bounces around inside the rodholder making all sorts of racket. But I only ran it in the back flush mount to see how well it worked out.  14" trout said it did ok!

a random branch or other bit of salad won't do that though. And once you've got that on your line you're no longer fishing. :(

I've trolled while using flush mounts behind me with a good amount of success. I am in the process of getting a RAM Revo. tube in front of me, but trolling with your rod behind you is absolutely doable. I will start with the rod in my lap and get speed going, then make however many pulls I need. Then put it in the rod holder behind me, and either flip open the spool and engage the clicker(must have for trolling with your rod behind you IMO), or put the reel in gear and open up the drag a bit so a fish could take out line with a good pull and engage the clicker. Usually, I'm just opening up the drag and engaging the clicker. Once the drag starts singing, spin around and grab the rod holder, thumb the reel, and give it a good hook set while tightening up the drag.
Then it's FISH ON!!!!  :hello2:

There's also a good tutorial on the web about trolling live bait by Jim Sammons. He talks about trolling with your rods behind you in it. http://kayakfishingtales.oncourss.com/  A couple of things on that though. I don't use circle hooks much and if you don't, you'll have to find a way to set the hook. Also, for the rubber band trick, I would imagine you'd have to be using a braided mainline.

Sammons is trolling in the ocean though. Way less things to hang up on compared to river or lake fishing. The sound has a ton of salad in summer so really not doable. No doubt you can troll w/ your rod behind you. I guess it just matters whether you like paddling or fishing more.  ;)

More PVC rod holder ideas from Aquahunters.   Nice headrest.

I was also inspired by Sonstorm's set up so after I sobered up a little from the beach clean up, I started working on something for my Revo.

I guess I wasn't sober enough because after sanding the connections and epoxying everything together, I remembered that I had planned on making the part that holds the poles moveable! Too late now!  :( I was going to drill a hole in the T next to the 45 degree elbow and drill 2 or 3 holes in the connection sleeve so that I could use a pin to change the angle of the rods holders or even remove them if I needed to paddle. Oh well. Guess I gotta wait for version 2 to test the theory.

At least I remembered to dremel the edges down on the parts that will come in contact with the rod butts so that they should slide in and out easily. Here are a few pics. Not done yet though. I still need to add a couple of padeyes for rod tie downs and drill a couple of drain holes to make sure that it never gets full of water.
