who makes that popup tent?

These guys make the one I posted above.

There are others as well.

I kinda like the layout of this one as well.  I could put a "J" mount on the one side for a kayak, and have the tent swing open the opposite way.

I could replace the front basket with my aluminum bed box just like the one below.

Well, when you all get your expedition rigs done, we'll need to road trip it NWKA style.  The only question is whether we're going to Alaska or Baja

-Allen

Funny as they are about the same distance from Oregon/Washington.  I'd rather go to Baja in a tent....less bears down there.  ;D

I'm leaning towards building something like this so my kids can "camp" in their own space when we take the truck camper, or I can tow it behind the Tacoma so I can do a basic overnighter closer to my intended yak fishing trip without needing the entire truck camper.

I am currently building something similar.  More like a Hi-Lo trailer.  I already built a trailer with adjustable racks. It can hold from4 to six now, but once the camper portion is on (which will be removable), it will only be able to hold 4.  I converted a Snowbear utility trailer I had purchased from Costco several years ago for a Jon Boat I had built.  I just need to get the racks either painted or powder coated.  I was going to post a how-to, but I didn't want INSAYN to make fun of my welding skills (they have depreciated greatly in the last 19 years) ;D.

I wouldn't make any more fun of your welding skills, than someone would of my fishing skills.   8)

Now post up that How-to, already.

I will start on it later.  Got to work on building the new kitchen cabinets so I can store up some WAF points

There were a couple times this summer that I thought the Rack & Roll would look slick behind an old 1200cc Honda or Kawasaki...

Cool trailer ideas. I am not completely satisfied with my canoe/yak trailer. Its OK, but not the best. I have one of those Trailex canoe trailers. Aluminum I-beam job.  It works fine for one yak or canoe. I keep my Ultimate 12 mostly rigged up on it. Quick and easy to launch. I just lift the U-12 off and set it down on the bank or in the water.
I broke the rear bunk arms trying to haul my relatively wide Don Hill mini-drifter on it. Bumpy roads and metal fatigue finally tore the aluminum arms.  So I replaced 'em with some wood.

I don't like the small 8" wheels on it, either. More rpms means more wear on the bearings and more heat. Those little wheels cause me worry every time I haul the trailer at hwy speeds. I'm thinking of getting another trailer with at least 12" wheels and customizing it like some of the ideas you guys have presented. I want to make it convertible for either a pram or yaks. Thanks for sharing.

I still think you could skip the expedition rig, go with a simple trailer and pull it behind CBY's Squarestream.;D

Well, judging from the posts I won't be getting heckled for getting a bit lazy using a trailer  :)

Two big factors in my upcoming decision are:

One - Getting something light enough I can tow it with a smaller car.  I can't imaine a scenario when we won't be paying $4+ for a gallon of gas.  When that happens I may be towing this thing with a Yugo (for those old enough to rememeber  ;)) or some other econobox.

Two - Also being the type who likes to make a purchase once, I ilke some good quality and functionality.

Nanook, what skews you to the Malone trailer.  I like the price over the Rack N Roll though.  Malone doesn't seem to have a "second level" and shows the model with the 4 J racks for a 4 kayak scenario.  Some reviews said that these were crappy.  I also like the look of the Seawing mounts but there is no way to fit 4 of these on a single level.

Thanks, Bill

The Malone trailer is what I have. Price was the main reason, I couldn't justify almost double the price for shocks over leaf springs. I also prefer the steel to aluminum. It took us a couple hours to build, and has worked great ever since. I've used it to haul kayak, rafts, lumber, coolers, and just about anything else we could strap to it. It's light enough to tow behind my Kia Rio, or just roll around the yard without being attached to the car.

The square bars will take Malone, Yakima, and Thule attachments. I've got 2 Malone Autoloaders, 1 Yakima Hull Raiser, and 1 Thule folding Hull-A-Port. All have their pluses & minuses. Personally, I'd buy the base Malone trailer:

The add a Yakima Big Stack. It gives the most options for tying on boats or anything else:

Let me know if you have any other questions,
Brian

Here is mine.  It isn't fancy but it is cheap and functional.  A $300 used Snowbear utility trailer, an hour of welding, and two pair of mako saddles that came with a used kayak and we are rolling.  I tow the setup with my Nissan Altima and the kayak racks remove easily so you have use of a plain utility trailer when the need arises.  I rigged it for three kayaks but four would be pretty easy.

EO, that's EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Adding a bolted and locked storage box below the yaks would make it perfect. For extended trips, there's still lots of room for firewood.
