Been considering hitting the shrimp season this year for the first time ever.  Anybody else planning on going?  I'm in the middle of searching out gear needs, etc. around the site, but figured I'd see if anyone was going, maybe get a NWKA floatilla out there  ;D

Hi,

I am thinking of hitting it on one of the open days.  I did it some years back on my friends sailboat but have never done the Hood Canal with my kayak.  It is a total zoo so having a group of kayakers might be prudent (strenth in numbers!).  I have 2 prawn traps with 400" of line for each which may be overkill for the Hood Canal.  I have crabed and prawned a bit with my kayak in other areas and it is definitely easier with a few people rafted up especialy when deploying and pulling the traps.  I was thinking of towing a rubber raft and use it as a gear barge as carrying weighted traps, floats and tons of line and deploying from the kayak can be quite challenging.  Last time we tried it we did not do that great so I am going to do some homework on where some better spots might be.

I will be doing the shrimp thing on May 1 but out of Picnic Point. Let us know how Hood Canal does BD. I'd like to give it a try someday. If anyone wants to give it a shot in my hood let me know. Just make sure you've got a trap that meets all the regs, have 10 pounds of weight for your trap, and over 300' of leaded line. And yes, they're all necessary.

I was thinking of doing the same.  but to safe on 300' of rope, I was thinking of using the fishing pole method.  Using 100 line with a swivel on each end which would allow you to connect to the cage and to the reel.

I found a video on you tube about this.  Go to you tube and type on kayak shrimping.  Some guy in Alaska did the video.

Seems that it would be much better than pulling all the rope by hand.  This might even work for crab pots...

What Z said---I used to shrimp at Holly, a zoo fer sure, especially with the shortened season and shortened days.   We got best results with a combo bait of Puss-N-Boots captain's dinner, with some salmon scraps.  250-300 feet is the zone. And pulling the trap is a gut-buster if it's weighted and loaded with shrimp---will make your arms feel like noodles.

Oh yeah, one hellova workout. You may only have to pull your traps a few times but ooh doggie! Makes you feel all manly though. The PB'rs ooh and ahhh when they see you with a limit on your yak and ask how you pulled up the traps. ;D

I was at Outdoor emporiun today, they had some really neat folding shrimp traps that would fit on the back of the yak--stainless and poly mesh, about $75

I've never shrimped before (only crabbed) but I'd be up for a paddle on the Hood if you need a buddy/2nd rope puller-upper ;D

been getting some coon striped shrimp here in the Far Southland as well.
I use crushed shore crabs for bait. ;)
At this time, they are holding eggs, just leave them on when you boil the shrimp...the eggs are very tasty!!!

Alrighty, who got after it yesterday?  We did, but not by yak, so no report will be given.

Non-yak reports are still fun. I wouldn't mind hearing about it.

Wasn't able to see much, but a thick black line down the middle of the post.  (My browser may be at fault here) Certinally no pictures, little text.

I could see the site fine.  Are you behind a firewall?
