My previous truck's lumber rack had square bars and the Thule Slide & Glides were secure on the square bars.  When I transferred the Thule to the round bars of the newer truck's rack, they spun around and the screws gouged the bottom of my virgin Revo.  After regaining my composer and assuring the neighbors I was not dangerous, I started shopping for new carriers.

Most of my fishing is done solo so I need to load the boat myself.  For solo loading I am looking at the Yakima HullyRollers and the Mako Saddles.  Occasionally, I'll have a partner so will need to carry both boats, and for that I am looking at J-carriers, the Yakima HullRaisers.

Looking at the Yakima mounting systems, it appears they may suffer from the same tendency to spin on my 1-5/8" round bars as the Thule.

Does anyone have experience with the Yakima mounts on round non-Yakima bars?

That's what i got for the truck, mounted to the canopy. They work great as long as you don't have to span more then say five feet between bars, with the back bar as far back as possible so the boat actually hits the rollers before the canopy. Any farther and it's just too heavy to keep from sliding across the canopy or falling in between if you have open racks.

I also have the Yakima round bars and i still have the problem of getting the rollers and the mako saddles tight enough to not spin for some reason. Maybe a layer of tape around the bar where it mounts? or some of the non skid sticky stuff would would great probably.

i have the yakima system with rollers and mako saddles and yes they do move about a bit...i actually removed them and put foam pipe wrap (black insulation) and ziptied the foam to the round bars and use that instead of the rollers/mako. for the trip to the beach and back i think it works fine but i wouldnt leave the yak on this set up over night or long term might deform the bottom.

Are the mounts metal or plastic?

Do you both have the Yakima round bars?  What kind of bar clamps do you have?  There is the Universal MightyMount (like a pair of jaws with a bolt through the chin and into the palate.  And there's a little squeeze clamp for the 1" round Yakima bars.  Then there there are horizontal and vertical kind of strappy MightyMount14.

I am considering drilling a hole in the bottom of the mount and bar for a self-tapping stainless set screw to keep them from spinning.

I have the plastic snap clip deals, the second link. It seems the parts where the bolt goes through are bottomed out together.  A layer of tape/nonskid should remedy that situation, haven't got to it yet but need to before the ORC.

besides that little problem and once you get them set right, they are great. I thought it was gonna be more difficult to use but it's not bad. My truck is a full size 4X4 with canopy and i not exactly in tip top shape physically and i can load/unload with relative ease.

Oh yea, did i mention expensive.... :-\

FWIW, i just got a pair of HullRaisers to haul the T11 and T15 at the same time.  The idea was to keep the T15 on the bars upside down like I always have, but I like the HullRaisers so much that I think I need a second pair.  Granted, the T15 looks pretty funny on the HullRaisers attached to the lil Kia Rio5, but thus far have performed very well,  I also find them easier to load than the crossbars...

I like the Yakima Hullraisers. I can carry a P15 and a T140 on top of my Tacoma. I always load them by myself. Basically I just hold them by the handle, then do a military press up to the top of my truck. I'm kind of a sissy but can load both boats just fine.  :D

I have a pair of Hull Raisers on the square bars of my trailer, and have used them on Thule's square bars as well. I just use the included plastic clips, popping out the tabs so they fit square bars. Works well, and don't move around. On the other hand, I've used Thule, Malone, and Yakima attachments on round bars, and all of them slide around. This isn't always a bad thing. I've had a few boats that fit better in cradles due to the fact I could tilt them forward/back a fit to fit boat contours.

I was constantly having to tighten my saddles and hully rollers on my Yakima round bars.  They really need to change their design; splined or octagonal shaped bars maybe?

What kind of truck and/or rack are you trying to fit to?  I have a Thule gutter-mount system from when I had my Landcruiser gathering dust in my garage right now.  I'll also have a full set of mighty mounts I'm not going to be using once my new roof rack shows up this week  >:D

I should bring all this crap down to ReRack when I head down for the ORC.

Sounds like someone should contact Yakima and let them know their round bar systems suck.  Might want to point them to this thread.

I am mounting my carriers on a truck lumber rack with 1-5/8" round cross bars.  Perhaps Yakima should be using stainless U-bolts.  Round bars don't come in too many diameters, say from 1" to 2".

They know. That's why we only sell Thule with the square bars. Yakima's round bars are great for everything BUT kayak stuff. It all rolls on the bar.

I've even got a few buddies that work for Yakima, they told design about it, and they laughed him off because he was new and young.

We have since closed our account with Yakima. There new stuff addresses this issue, but it doesn't completely fix the problem. The bar is still round, and stuff still spins when you slide/roll a boat on it.

I have the glide and set on yakima bars. it SUCKS! I'm getting a Thule rack (finally) to replace the Yakima rack. Anything slide/roll style is going to rotate on a round bar. period.
Factory oval bars are fine. Everything but round is fine.

Just FYI there is a place in PDX called Re-rack that will buy your used rack gear. They also sell used rack stuff. Not sure of there number though.

Thule also carries an oval shaped bar that's slightly more aerodynamic, if you're concerned with that.  It also looks cooler and costs more.

If you really want to make self-loading easy, check these out:
