Hit up PC this morning after camping at Webb county campground. Note to self...don't try this on the same weekend as Reach the Beach. It took an hour to get from the 101 turn off to the campground.

Although I was camped across the road, I still didn't hit the water until 9am. doh! It was glassy and calm, unlike the evening before. I saw two other kayakers fishing the rock but I was in search of lingzilla. It turned out to be Cephalopodan and a friend. Thanks for the jump guys!  ;)

I headed out beyond the bouy until I found a small drop to about 100 feet. The fishing was slow out there but I did manage a nice vermillion for my efforts.

After a number of snags...note to self, 6 oz jig heads snag a lot and are WAY to expensive...I decided to do a little Fish Trap casting into random water. My second cast gave me a nice black rockfish for the freezer.

In both the trips out to PC this month, I've been trying to go without the Scopace I used last year. It seems that an hour is all I've been able to get before my stomach begins to argue. As the wind was picking up and I figured my strength wasn't going to be returning any time soon, I decided to pack it in. Well inside the bouy and just a bit off of the Cape, I saw some interesting structure and cast a Fish Trap out there. The result...my first greenling. Cute little buggers, let's see how they taste. Invited this one along for dinner and he graciously accepted.

I think it's time for some river action and a springer in the box...

As it turns out, Cephalopodan was killing the black rockfish and cabezons around the rock and in the kelp. Will he just lurk or post?   ;)

Very nice work Jay! sweet Vermillion, I have never caught anything Red(or Orange) out here yet.

Just break down and take the drugs, you'll have a way better time and get more 5+ hour days on the Salt. You just don't fish the salt enough to get used to it, unfortunately.

I'm sure you'll enjoy that Greenling.

Don't even mention Springers.... :'(

Oh yea, i did pretty good on the Blacks today too.

P.S.  Will someone come down here and go to Simpson Reef with me? Tomorrow? :banjo:
See ya on the water..

@coosbay

Good to see you out there yesterday steelheadr. This was my first trip on the yak since last year and I couldn't have asked for a better launch.  I expected to see more of you guys out there!  A friend (borrowing my wife's Necky) and I hit the water around 7:00 and had lines down shortly after.  Without a depth finder or fish finder, we spent a good bit of the day trying to find something on the bottom that might hold fish.  The rest was trying to figure out some point of reference to stay on said spot.  The best method for this was hanging out near the rock on the north side.  We did manage to catch a LOT of under size lingcod and several greenling.  The blacks were actually pretty hard to come by, but by 11:30 we had 5 keepers between the two of us.  In addition, cabs were plentiful near the rock and we kept two above 20 inches.  Not bad for a first trip for the year.

I told my friend about this site, but maybe he won't check it for a while and will miss these pics.  He is an experienced surfer but not so experienced on the yaks.  He was turning for a picture and right after I snapped the shot he went for an unexpected swim.  He did everything right after hitting the water and was back on top in no time.  He WAS in the water long enough for the hydro to trigger on his inflatable pfd!  It scared both of us when the CO2 cartridge went off.  Here are a before and after pic.  Priceless.

No gear was lost and the day continued.  He did have to let some air out of the bladder.  Those things blow up huge!  I know that inflatables aren't ideal for kayaking, but that was all he had and my wife's xsmall wasn't going to work on a 6'1'' guy.  A dory boat pulled up shortly after he was back on the yak to make sure we were alright.  Nice of the guys.

Try Ginger Trips chewing gum. You can find it at Whole Foods (Whole Paychecks) or other similar store. I have not been seasick since using the product including several long range trips and rough water.

I was there for a whole 30 minutes or so today... seems I had only a couple of jigs, as opposed to the hand fulls I thought I had... doh!
