You will love the mirage drive!  Congrats on the new boat.  Rigging them up is 1/2 the fun.  I can't wait to put my mirage to work for me trolling for ocean coho.

PP, have you surf launched/landed yet with poles stashed in the hull, or lashed flat above deck somehow?

My rods are one piece 7.5-8 footers.  On land with some work I can get them into the hull, But I could never make it happen on the water (loading or unloading).  Plus it is just to cramped for them not to start shedding eyes when you try to remove them less then absolutely perfectly. It bugs me that I can't get them into the hull but I guess thats the way it will have to be... I have launched in the surf 5 times in the last couple weeks and have had no problems...yet (no big huli's).  I have them strapped to the deck, but I am not happy with the setup.  I am working on a new way to secure them through the surf that I think just might be the ticket.  If it works I will share some pics.  Kind of a horizontal "rocket launcher" idea

I've seen folks but pvc tubes on the front of their kayaks.  They place the tips of their rods in the tubes for protection and strap the butt of their rods to the side of the kayak.  I'll see if I can't find a picture somewhere.

that's kind of what I'm thinking of, but put the butts of the rods in the tubes and then velcro the front part of the rods snug to the hull.

I was kinda thinking to save my reels from a huli stirred sand slurry, that I'd just take the reels off the rods while out on the water, and put them in dry bag below deck.  Then go about lashing down the rods on deck.

I'm gunna have to practice the rod stowage in the hull while actually on water before I can safely say it's gunna be my go to method.

The other option would be to start trying the hand line fishing method.  No rod or reel to deal with all together.  :-\

Congrats on the Hobie. Stashing and retrieving rods through the front hatch is easily doable but usually comes after getting used to the yak. I always stash my rods when surf launching. Matter of fact I stash most all my gear in that front hatch. If you're worried about your guides there's plenty of ways to make a low profile sleeve that can protect them. FFTW posted a nice product a while back.

Btw the pad eye with only one screw that holds the rudder cable in the rear of the yak is like that for a reason. So you can make easy repairs by not threading rudder cables. Screw it down and you screw yourself. ;)

What sort of repair are you thinking of?

I am trying to imagine a rudder cable repair that does not involve a free end to thread through a loop.  In any case it is a single screw/nut.  Off Boeing Creek I had the rudder control cable on one side jump out of the half-attached pad-eye and render the rudder in-op.  The plastic pipe clamp would have prevented it.

I looked at the pad eyes in my hull, looks like a reasonable setup to me.

I can see from the bracket mounted behind the seat that the boat is an Adventure Island.  It now makes sense why he would move his rods so far out and up, to keep them from being involved the the line for the sail.  Very practical considering it might actually be feasible to troll at sailing speed in Hawaii.

Don't think this will work too good for surf launching/crashing.  ;D
