Howdy all,

I headed out with the F.V. Siamez again this year for albacore (through Tradewinds Depoe Bay).  Rick has been captaining the FV Morningstar, a 43 footer, but pulled the Siamez (a 34 footers) out for the tuna action.  Yesterday the seas were calm (compared to most of the other trips I've gone on), the weather decent, and the fishing ended up being pretty hot.  46 on the boat by day's end, and all where a good grade (average was probably mid 20's in weight).  Had a couple of rockets come in - it's funny how the smaller fish were the heaviest fighters.  We got out of Depoe Bay around 6, and were on the fish around 9.  The majority of the fish were only about 20 or so miles out, I think the furthest out we went was about 30 miles.  Mostly singles, a few doubles, and all but one of the triples turned into singles or doubles - having ten lines out at the same time tens to get a little crazy.  I brought in one blue shark, which we managed to get unhooked in the water.  My share was 6 fish, since there were eight of us fishing, and we gave one apeice to Rick and Mike, the deckhand.

Mike and I were talking about the ORC2010, and he had seen us out that day - he is looking at buying a kayak to poke around some of the beaches in the Depoe Bay area that would only be accessible via landing from the sea.  He has also be talking to Rick about other ideas for the FV Siamez, and one of them is to put together a six pack rig to haul kayaks on.  He has looked at the insurance rider requirements, and that is the big sticking point right now - but he is interested, and has been researching how to reduce the insurance premium - one way is that every kayaker goes through sea survival and rescue school, and another way is to have a deckhand who is also certified as a boat captain.  I'm going to keep pursuing this idea.

Exciting day over all.

Nice Madoc, I can't believe they were so close, and nobody was even going after them before this weekend that I am aware of.

I paddled out of the hole about a half hour after you left. I had a hunch it might be a productive day as there was a tiny sliver of a moon on Fri. night. 4.5 foot swell close to 7 sec apart. Took in a limit of 7 blacks by noon. Took some nice whitecaps and dirty water as I waited for Mr. Max to hit the hole in front of me, which was a little dicey. The last thing I want to do is slow down one of those charters, I don't want to give them any reason to give us grief.

On my way up 101 I dropped by Coastal Outfitters and talked story with Sammy for a few. I checked out the store, signed up for the email list, and thanked them for sponsoring ORC 10. They have a little something for everyone, Yak, Fish, Surf, and Campers. Way more cool than the rest of the chotchkie huts up and down the strip.  :D
