Went out to the Edmonds area to mooch for some early Chinook this morning. Made bait in about an hour and got to the mooch. Made a few passes and picked up the regular pesky fish. On the next pass I got a little close to rocky structure when I had a pretty good takedown. It definitely wasn't a founder, was too energetic for a dog fish.. maybe a salmon? Nah, it was making runs straight down. I saw an orangish white shape coming up and I was really stumped. A few more reels and a 20.25" copper rockfish was on the end of the line. The best Puget Sound copper I've ever gotten. Looked like a good old one so quickly got down to taking a few pics. Didn't have my hawg trough so made a one handed pic really tough. Put 'em back in the water and it sped straight down. Hopefully to make more big rockfish babies. No salmon today but interesting.

I love the way they fight.  They seem to really be taking off in the Sound.  We even saw one come up from sandy/muddy area about a week ago.  They seem much heartier than blacks.

Thats an old timer! Most of that specie are less than half that size anymore.
Zee where did you launch? On the concrete ramp next to the pier? I've been going down to the pier every other day at a tide change to see if I could get a king by tossing jigs from the pier. It's been really slow there, as one of the regulars that fishes there every day, said that only 9 salmon have been caught since June 1st.

The only "legal" place to launch is the public launch down the harbor. It's pretty hard to find but near the sling launch. I launch from the beach south of the harbor if it's too crowded.

The chinook are really late this year (seems like every year lately) and have heard only good reports in the ocean and strait so far. I stopped by the Ballard locks and only saw one chinook. By this time of year it should be at least half full of 'em. I'm having withdrawals.. :help:

The location of the "legal" launch has me stumped. Going south from the pier there is a large sling launch thats used to haul large boats. Next is the pay sling launch by Bud's Bait. last is the launch for boats that are in the rack storage. South of that is the dog park. With its wonderful aroma and the "land mines" that the dogs leave behind. My Pro Angler would be a PITA to get thru the zig zag fenced gates at the dog park and over the logs to the beach. I've put in a couple of times next to the pier. PO'd the ranger, but there is no reference to launching yaks on the signs with their list of no-no's.

From July 20, Salmon University report:
Quote
The lock counts of Chinook are behind the 14 year average at this time yet the peak thru the locks is a month out.

Sockeye counts are already over the projected return with 136,000 counted although still too few for a season but it is good to see an increase from last year.

Reports indicate some fish taken at Possession Bar and Jefferson Head.  Jefferson Head is only 3 nm across the Sound from Richmond Beach and Possession Bar is only only 3 nm across from Mukilteo - an hour of easy pedaling.

Po Bar is actually a 30 min crossing from Picnic Point and can be tricky due to traffic. It's still a good destination as long as you're mindful of boat traffic and water conditions. An air horn is nice to have. Jeff Head is a tough crossing going right through the shipping lane and you can get stranded on that side if winds or current pick up too much. It's really hard to gauge how fast a ship is coming and have found myself sprinting to get out of the way of a container ship I was sure I could beat. You're righ though DN both real great places to fish though.

The SE corner of Possession isn't bad from Picnic point, but the trip back can really suck on the way back with an ebb tide and a wind blowing in down Admiralty inlet. Throw in boat traffic and you will have earned every fish that you catch. I've used Picnic as a launch point for years (wish they opened the gate before 7 am) for my toon boat. Never went across to Possession but have had great success in Browns Bay, and also up towards the shipwreck.
If you want to fish Jeff Head the best way to get there is to catch the 5:35 ferry from Edmonds to Kingston. Launch in the marina and fish, and not have to worry about commercial traffic or weather. I've had 2 limit trips this king season on my Pro Angler by taking the ferry over and launching at Eglon and fishing Pilot Pt to pt no Pt.
