I have a Emotion Grand Slam Angler and currently am in freshwater only around North Idaho but will be moving to Olympic Pennisula in about 10 months and want to learn all I can about kayak fishing the salt before I get out there.

With that being said for freshwater fishing in Idaho, I set up a anchor trolley, I used  4 eyelets w/brass screws sealed by loctite silicone adhesive sealant. Now that I'll be moving and my sights are set on rigging for saltwater. I don't experience any leaking from the screws or holes but was wondering if the choice of brass screws was the best idea. Do I need to take off my anchor trolley and try to fix the holes? And can the holes be fixed? Or will a freshwater rinse be enough after each trip?

I have no experience kayak fishing the saltwater or rigging a kayak for that so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Daniel

Daniel, welcome to the wet side. Where are you going to be on the peninsula? Brass does get affected by salt but you have some time to not worry about that. I have some brass clips and being rinsed off they are doing fine. Your kayak looks great and you should be fine in the salt. The big issue is the cold water. You will want to think about some options whether wetsuit, drysuit or other should you end up in the drink. Another thing to think about is communication in an emergency. Fog drops quick out here and weather can change quick. getting blown to the other side of the lake is one thing getting blown into shipping lanes is another. Give a holler when you arrive and if sequim or Port angeles is not to far i can show you some of the local areas. I am new to this as well but would glad to paddle with you. As far as learning ahead of time... you are there. this site and going through old posts really speeds up the learning curve. When a question pops in your mind do a word or topic search and you will find lots of reading. doug in sequim

I would repeat what Salty said.  A wet suit/dry suit or neoprene waders.  A VHF is a must!!!
Light if you got out around the hours of darkness.
Compass and map or GPS.
You didn't mention a PFD, but hopefully you already have that.

Welcome to the Pacific North Wet! ;D

I would have to echo again VHF!!! Having a radio on has been a very comfortable feeling knowing how fast the weather changes out in the sound.

You're fine keeping the brass fasteners; mariners have used it for centuries on their ships.  Be sure to hose them off from time to time and they'll outlast you.

VHF, some form of drysuit, pfd, etc... are all must have's as well. You may want to get a head start on your J.D. for reading the regs though.  ::)

The problem with brass clips, nearly all clips like leash clips, is the steel spring inside.  Rinse every time, and hit with WD-40 every few times.

Ditto on the dry suit and PFD.  I was on the sound yesterday with full fleece under a dry suit and despite two pairs of heavy wool socks, my toes still eventually got numb.

In the Puget Sound?

Seems that the temp runs from 54-56 around Victoria.

Thursday morning my internal hull mounted transducer was reading 56F for Puget Sound.  Pretty cold for the surface in August.
