You can protect your catch, according to
the preamble to the reg. I have carried
a slingshot for years but still have lost
kings to sea lions and seals...

Plead ignorance if you get busted for using a slingshot on the water.  The methods appear to be limited:

"... for use by private property owners to deter Pacific harbor seals and California seal lions from damaging property (developed waterfront, decks, docks, floats, piers, bait receivers, vessels at anchor, etc.)."

Or toss out your anchor.

The last part of the reg recommends slingshots as one of the methods to protect your catch. With my luck I'll smack a big sea lion, and he'll see it as  challenge and climb aboard the yak for a fight :o

haha, that would be hilarious.  At least then I could pull a South Park and yell "It's coming right for us!"

The moment a seal lion or seal tries to climb aboard my yak, then as far as I'm concerned, "Natural Law" takes precedence over any man-made laws. In other words, I believe that when I'm under attack when in my yak, I'm free to defend myself any way that I can. I'd knife or harpoon the sucka and start swinging with my fish billy, the Feds be damned!

I've been thinking of making a harpoon in case a shark grabs my bow. Jam it right into its eye socket with all my might! Thing like that would come in handy for an attacking sea lion, I'll bet. I tell you, when under attack from anyone anything, any rules and regulations simply evaporate in the heat of the moment. Time to get real and self-defend! Its all intuitive at that point. There is no time to think about it and weigh any legal consequences. That would be absurd! The business immediatly at hand is to defend oneself. Who has time to think? You just act! Its your legitimate right to self defense.

Understand that I'm talking about a sea lion trying to climb aboard my yak, not one just trying to steal a fish from the end of my line.

A sea lion tries to climb aboard my yak and its self defense on my part as it'll eat a 12 gauge flare for its efforts. Several years ago I "appropriated" my sons Tippman paintball gun after he lost interest in it. Works like a charm on the big C as those fish stealers really hate get paintballed.

Wow, I just had an idea. I wonder if one could fill paintball ammo with something really stinky and sticky that a sea lion would just hate. Non-toxic, but really offensive to a sea lion. Or is that possible?

As w/ shark attacks and close encounters w/ sea lions and the like I think they're way too quick and agile for us to do anything effectively. We like to think we could handle them when it's on but it's always proven to happen too fast.

Like Fishunter who was attacked recently. He was face to face and could have easily grabbed/stabbed the shark but in the end it happens so fast and it's such a crazy situation that real thoughts never come up. Just reaction. Although not even in the same class as a GWS when that Steller seal lion buck was after me I only got seconds to react. I doubt I could have done anything since he popped up fast, splashed, barked and was gone. Seems larger predators attack and leave.

Couldn't agree more.  It seems that society is making a big mistake by trying to take the 'wild' out of wild animals.  I don't advocate harrassing wild animals, but when all "disturbance" of wild animals is scrutinized as "illegal" I think it's time to re-think what makes those animals wild.  Why on earth should we act in a way that makes them think they can do whatever they want around us?  Will it come to a sea lion injuring or killing someone because it's been "taught" that people will steer clear of it?

I too will do whatever I have to to kick that critter's ass if it tries to invade my space.
See you at Gimme Shelter

i guess when i launched at Sunset yesterday an ODFW person was watching me with binocs when dana pulled in . she said theres a sea lion on that rock, in a way that lead dana to believe i was doing something wrong...I guess a rock i was pedaling by or something..  when he told me. i couldn't help but chuckle, which rock? almost every rock out there has a sea lion/seal it. Then theres the tens of thousands at Simpson...Yea, we got a real seal/sea lion shortage.  ::)
See ya on the water..
