Heading out to Pacific City tomorrow. Trying for some rock/bottom fish. Couple questions:

Anyone else headed that way?
Where to park, I have not fished from here before. I have a Landcruiser and a trailer, can I pull down on the beach, if so do I need a beach parking permit, is it easy to get stuck?

Hey TX, I can tell you about the parking situation.  No permit to park.  Pull past the Pelican Brew Pub and down to the beach access.  Go down to the right and park where the Dory rigs are.  The Yaks get the same treatment as Dory fishermen, if you don't have a trailer put a note on the window (you have a trailer for the yak/not a problem).

A deputy told me they just need to know the vehicle parked in "Dory parking" is a rig that belongs to someone who launched watercraft.

It is easy to get stuck if you drive off track into dry sand.  Stay in the hard pack and keep your foot in it.  Really it is fine, if you get stuck don't worry because someone will pull you out.

If you want to get some good eats, go to the Sportsman.  It's a local/rough crowd -and the food is awesome.

*Don't forget your flag for the boaters to see- because safety friggen cool and chicks dig it.

Hope the water is good for ya,
-Scott

Sand was not a problem today.  The beach seems to get easier to drive on when there have been less tourists around.  Weather was amazing today, surf was fine too.

A note on driving on soft sand...

If you find yourself digging in, ((((STOP)))) now before you make it worse, as it won't magically get better.  Get out and drop all of your tire pressures enough to make the contact area of the tire show some bulge from the weight of the car.

Back out of the hole you started to dig prior, and steer away from it as you do.
Give forward a go and if it moves without digging in, you're set.  If it still digs, go lower on the tire pressure.
If you are arriving, park and go fishing!
If you are leaving, just work your vehicle towards the harder sand and then up the ramp.

There is a Shell station that has air for refill just south of Cape Kiwanda and over the bridge one block on Pacific
Ave.  (Roughly 1.5 miles)  Drive slow so you don't overheat the tires, turn carefully so you don't pull a bead.  In the end your tires will be fine.      8)

If you are not comfortable with lowering your tire pressures, self extraction, driving on pavement with lower pressures, then you may want to add a "recovery" strap to your vehicle gear.

Recovery straps, and tow straps are NOT one in the same.  Tow straps have hooks on either end to facilitate easy connection to each vehicle, but extremely dangerous to use as a recovery strap. If yanked on hard enough, a tow hook can unhook and become a projectile that can and has killed many folks as it crashes through the windshield and through the occupant's head.
A recovery strap only has loops on the ends.  These can be connected several different ways, and it is wise to practice on your own car before you "need" it.

Tuesday was beautiful at Pacific City.  We saw a bunch of  harbor porpoises and quite a few gray whales.  Here's a little clip I manged to catch of a gray whale.

Brian, that was awesome!  You definitely can't get that kind of whale experience from land while looking through Binoculars.

I went out at PC yesterday and there were whales everywhere.  One never got as close to me as in BSteves video, but they were all around.  Lot's of blow spouts.  Man, they have nasty breath!  Didn't launch until about noon but still got 4 blacks and 1 blue rockfish (outgoing tide).  A very cool day at the beach.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that the whales will go out of their way to not cause harm?  I've had them come within a couple of yards on several occasions and they always appear to deliberately avoid distrupting me.

True. 3 years ago at PC I was looking down into 70 FOW when I thought I'd drifted over a reef.. wait a tic.. the reef isn't that shallow.. It just  glided right under me and popped up 50 yards later.
