You guys seen this? It is slicker than snot and WAAAAAY easier than tying up a three section leader. Other than limiting you to a three sections (the two furled sections and the tippet), does anybody know of a down side?

Come to think of it, you could loop two, (2) section leaders together to get (5) sections with a tippet.

Come to think of it some more, you could make it as many sections as you want as long as you long as you are making half weight changes.

Finally got to watch the video. amazing how simple that is, but i still don't understand the need for a leader like that in fresh water bug waving for trout and bass.... :icon_scratch:

learned from Abby Shaw and John Murray when i was a kid how to tie my own using blood knots but it was all single strand progressive step down.

Wali experimented with rigging up a few of these down in La Paz.  It looked like tinsel to me, all shiny and sparkly.  That was the last thing you wanted in the clear water.

yeh,  digging deeper into it, i guess that's been a problem for some of the materials. it's an almost endless variety of possibilities.

Wali's referenced method is the simplest from what i've seen. some of the other methods have you building a jig table, adding counter weights, using electric drills with hook attachments, etc.

now that I'm starting to have an understanding of what and why, i like that fact that you can use  2lb mono and build up leaders to tackle 50lb fish!!

Sorry, this is full of it.
A good furled leader if tight, and will not pick up much water when cast out.
This is horrible and not worth the time.
The fly fisher in Lacey wa, has the best furled leaders around and will last multiple seasons!

Yeah, this is the worst thing EVER!

It just casts waaaay too easy, turns over the biggest fly gently, refuses to tie a decent wind knot no matter how far down my loop is tailing, and its only lasted 2 sessions thus far (and counting). Not to mention (Sage forbid) its cheap:o

It is kinda twinkly, but all of the real furled leaders are twinkly too. Perhaps I'll twist one up using the conventional method, but for now, I think I'll keep wasting my time with this one.  ::)

I am a big fan of simple and cheap when it comes to fly fishing or any fishing. Thanks for the info FFT, I'll have to give it a try.

Guys, not to take away from Wali's DIY bent, but here's an online store for furled leaders, and they even have a guide to help you slecet the right one.

http://www.blueskyfly.com/

i like the gift pack idea they have on one of the pages, but gotta warn ya, it costs as much as an average quality fly line does.

Wali, have you come up with any new variations or methods on these?
