You guys bring up some very good points and we are working on a solution.  Right now I am looking into a powerboat and/or seeing if there are any morphometric data for white sturgeon that we can use to estimate the length of over-sized fish.

Don't forget to consider the dilemma of targeting oversized breeders in a declining population.  Bringing these fish to submission in a kayak really runs their batteries down to zero, leaving them vulnerable to predation and other stressors.

After taking way to long to figure everything out we have finalized the details for the tournament.  The biggest change is that we have moved the date to Saturday January 15th.  We also tried to address most of the concerns brought up in this forum.  The tourney website should be up this week with all the details.  I'll keep you all posted.

Awesome. Something fun to start the new year with, and we can hopefully get a few keepers we can keep.

Sweet. I will actually be able to make this one. Just put in my time off request. I guess if it doesn't happen I'll just go fishing anyway.

After talking it over with some other folks, we decided in light of the changes to the sturgeon regulations we are opening up the Columbia River for the Tournament.  The Columbia River is open to retention so hopefully we will have some fish to measure at the tournament headquarters.   Washington fisherman are more than welcome to launch from the Washington side so they will no longer need an Oregon fishing license.   We will post these changes and a few other minor changes to the website as soon as we can.
Also, the registration fee goes up $10 after January 8th so  make sure you register early.

Nate,
I suspect most will be fishing the Willamette and taking photos of our fish. Will you have the ability to download SD or high capacity SD cards at the HQ?

Thanks,
Jay

Any preview on the raffle goodies?

The tourney is shaping up well.   Our sponsors, Next Adventure, Immersion Research, Stohlquist, Neo Sport and DryCASE, have provided plenty of gear for the raffle.   As it stands now everyone who has signed up is guaranteed a prize.  Also, Kayak Angler is providing a free year’s subscription to the magazine for all competitors.  For those of you that have not signed up yet, there is still time.
Family and friends are welcome at the BBQ and trophy ceremony.  We are also going to have Wii Fishing on hand in the Paddle Sport Center for family members who are interesting a bit less strenuous fishing .
We should be able to handle SD and high capacity SD cards with the computers at the HQ.  If anyone has any doubts please bring your cables so we can hook up your camera directly to the computer.

Just signed up dogg.  A quick question about check-in.  I plan on heading over to check-in after work on Friday (that way I have time to drive overnight to Wells Dam 8), so I won't have my gear or kayak with me.  Are those things required for the safety check?  Or is it more like a safety checklist?

Prolly.  It's the only hole I know.  And plenty of space there too  - unless the occasional waft of Johnny Walker or din of Kenny Chesney is offensive.

Thanks for signing up.  It is more of a safety checklist so you don't need to bring anything to the shop.  Also, we changed the menu a bit and will be having pizza after the tourney not a BBQ.
