I'm in the process of putting on a free Kayak Fishing Safety Seminar in the Seattle area and wanted to get an idea of the level of interest. It will involve a class session on land and then in the water practice with demos of kayak gear. There's a few companies that are interested in being a part of this which should make it pretty fun. Time frame about June.
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks,

I've been wondering if it wouldn't be a good idea to have classes like this before or after an event like the ORC. These kind of events are likely to attract the biggest numbers of seasoned and newbie kayakers. (And passerbys wondering "WTF?") Vendors would get maximum exposure to likely consumers. Could be held the day before or after. Quickie classes/seminars might even be possible after weigh-in.

Just trying to think about how you can get maximum bang for your buck, or the presenters' efforts.

I have a friend in Bremerton I'd like to take this class.  Course that would mean I'd be there too since I'd have to bring him a kayak.

This is a great opportunity for anybody who's either new to kayak fishing or still considering the purchase of a kayak.  Heck, it's not a bad idea for those of you with a couple of seasons under your belt.

Zee has lots of experience and can help you identify potential hazards as well as instruct you in how to recover from bad situations.

It's better to practice skills you think you'll never need than figure them out when your life is potentially on the line.

Good to hear. You don't need to bring a kayak, there will be some on hand to use. All models of Hobie kayaks will be free to demo thanks to Hobiecats Northwest and also looks like Kokatat will have drysuits and other gear to demo as well. Barbecue after all is done? I bring the grill and condiments you bring your hot dogs and hamburgers.

I can't find a location in this thread - but assuming it is in the Seattle area - count me in.

Sounds like fun. Unfortunately, I'll have a lot of free time starting in a week or so.   >:(  I'll be up in the Seattle area a number of times over the next few months. I'll be there if it is at all possible.

I would definitely try to make it as it would be a great way to teach the SLF Kayak safety and brush up myself.

Will you be covering such safety-related topics as beer spill prevention and techniques for whizzing in a narrow mouth Nalgene whilst afloat?  Nah, good on ya, Zee.  I seem to remember Sweet Mother Hagg hosting something like this for the Oregonian paddlers.  Maybe it's time for another?

These topics would be much appreciated!! I have always found that the contortion of trying to use the relief zipper on the dry suit and getting the proper angle to clear the side of the yak to be quite an undertaking.... Last time I gave up and peed in the foot wells and shook the boat to keep from it from hanging around for a while....
