My cousin is planning a trip to San Juan Island (Friday Harbor) for memorial weekend and I’m thinking about joining him. We’d be staying in the county campground on the west side of the Island. It seems like it would be a great spot for Lings and rockfish but I wanted to see what you WA guys suggested. Thanks!

Never fished there before but the structure looks good.  Lings like steep and rocky.  And the ledge there looks like it drops off pretty nicely.  I'm sure there are lings hanging out there.  Check out the chart here and zoom in to find Smallpox Bay.

Sweet, thanks for the chart. So would you fish for them in they 30-50 feet range or go all the way over 100?

Yes.   ;D

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain

Just remember ... bottomfishing is closed in waters deeper than 120'.  And fishing for rockfish is prohibited.

Any of you Washington guys have specific advice as far as set up or bait? Is there Halibut fishing in that area?

Say what?

Gulp minnows and shrimp are deadly on lead jigheads. Knife jigs will work. So will jigs like Pt Wilson Darts, though they're pretty pricey. The main targets are lings and greenlings in that area. Look for rough bottoms and kelp.

I've heard that a few halibut are picked up just south of Henry Island (Mitchell Bay area, to the north of Small Pox Bay). Never tried it, myself. The bottom in Small Pox looks good on the charts. Salmon Bank, off the south end of the island produces some, too. Big exposure there, and wind and tide can make it pretty hairy.

Bill's referring to using Gulp plastics (or whatever it's made of) and spraying them w/ Gulp spray. Gulp on Gulp biotch!
