Yaksurf and I are tentatively planning a trip up to Depoe Bay for a try at Halibut. Launch early in the AM, pedal west for an hour or so and drop our lines in 200 feet of water and see what happens.

After 2 hours if we don't see any action we will come back inshore and catch some rockfish..

Would be cool to have more people.
See ya on the water..
Roy

Right on! An epic adventure to be had for sure.  Wish I could make it out there to follow along, but will have to live vicariously through after action report instead... ;D

While at Depoe a couple of weeks ago, I was talking to a commercial guy at the dock. He said that he had caught and released a 35 pounder while fishing in 100 ft of water. He had some very nice lings as well.

Report:

Well Wednesday turned out to be Tuesday as the conditions were "better". We paddled for an hour an dropped in 200 fow. We had a few nibbles, but the ones that hit me were probably flounder as they couldn't get their mouths around my circle hook. I ran into my neighbor after I went home who was commercial crabbing yesterday morning and he remarked about how strong the offshore current was. He didn't have to tell me, my arms were absolute rubber as I came back in the hole.

We paddled out maybe a little over 2 miles out, drifted south at least 2 more and fought for every inch on the way back. When we got back in closer we dropped for some lings off of Whale Cove and Rocky Creek. I only managed a few unders and one black that got put back to grow.

It was a nice day, 3 foot swell and no wind in the AM turning into a slight breeze in the afternoon. I woke up this morning to numb arms passed the elbows and sore shoulders. I'm sure Yaksurf and CBY are walking a little slow today.

Always fun to chase the halibut, and always good fishing with those two maniacs. One of these days we'll get one!

Nice Report LB.  The current was ripin yesterday which made for a LONG pedal back.  The ocean was nice short of the strong current.  We should turned south and pulled out at Beverley beach.  My legs are still a little sore today.  I caught a nice 24' ling and a 19" cabi on the way back in.  I'm including a pick of the biggest flat fish we caught and a couple picks of cby.

That was a hard day. That current was ripping and we drifted way south. I could not believe how long it took to get back inshore and i ended up still at whale cove which is a 1/2 mile south of the actual entrance. It was still work to stay there and fish for rockfish, but the fishing was good. I landed two decent keeper lings and a upgrade cabbie.

I still had fun and it's nice to know this old body can put in a day like that and still be able to walk..

See ya on the water..

The slow-mo of that ling swinging your Fish Grip is pretty sweet Roy! I'm guessing you wouldn't have squeezed your knees together if his head was facing the other direction?

I did get a new outback last fall.  My 06 outback that I bought used suffered the dreaded drive well crack.  Hobie was great about it and replaced the hull (they pro rated it a little bit).  The improvements on  the 2010 are great (ruder system & drive locks).

The real time footage is pretty funny too..and damaging to my ego...That's why it shall remain buried in the archives...

The thing was going for my groin, i know it!!

Nice vid and pics.  Just consider it a good investment of time for that eventual takedown!

But as the old YES song goes "It can happen to you, It can happen to me, It can happen to everyone eventually!" ...as long as your line is in the water!!!  Great job getting out there!
