I've been out of kayaking for a bit. One new thing I learned new (to me) is the invasive species permit . This got me wondering, what else might I not know or is new.

I didn't find a thread on this , so I was wondering ...If the river patrol/coast guard was to check me out on my kayak, what if any items are needed as a minimum? Links or lists, are fine, but would rather keep the common sense of a drysuit/spare paddle/gps,etc on the ocean out.......unless some of that got mandated too.
If I decide to put up a small kayak sail or even a hobie sized kayak sail, does that mean i need to register the kayak? What are you thoughts on this?

I always felt what I know might not be the issue..its what I dont know.

To take the guess work out of things, here's the link you need:

How you interpret them is up to you!   ;D

Great , thanks. good to know kayaking is still simple in the legal sense.

Now as to a white lantern i guess i'll have to replace the fireflies i used to use in the ice age.

I don't know if you wear a PFD or not, but for class III or above whitewater it is required in Oregon:
Quote
As of January 1, 2010, ORS 830.215 (Life Jacket Statute) will be amended to read:

NEW (3) Notwithstanding the classification by the State Marine Board of the types of personal flotation devices approved for various classes of vessels pursuant to subsection (2) of this section, a person operating a boat on any section of waters rated class III or higher on a commonly accepted scale of river difficulty, and all passengers in the boat, shall wear a properly secured personal flotation device.  The personal flotation device must be of a type prescribed by rules adopted by the State Marine Board.

Personally, I wear one all the time.  Here is a link to the classifications of the variious Oregon rivers:

You'll find that most every person that posts pics regularly here wears a PFD at all times.  After all, this is the PNW.  Make sure you get a comfortable PFD.  This way you will be more likely to keep it on whenever you're on the water.  I recommend spending a little more on the PFD and maybe a little less on miscellaneous fishing gear if it comes to it.

Welcome aboard by the way!  Hope to see you on the water!

If you have a OK Torque or other motorized kayak, you DO NOT need the invasive species permit.  You should, however, have the kayak registered and have numbers.

I know there are a couple of Torques on the water that do not have numbers on them.

At the shop we try to make sure that everyone has who gets a Kayak has a pfd, whistle, and if the kayak is over 10 ft long an invasive species tag.  The one time  I got checked while fishing they looked for these 3 things plus a fishing license.

The Torque was a great surprise.good point on registering it. I'm tempted to get one,but I'm thinking the $999 premium gets me a wet suit sooner, or a good paddle, pfd and helps pay for the $600 rack I just got.
One strategy I'm thinking is go more bare bones kayak and add to the yak as I need, then maybe next year,Ocean Cadiyak...err kayak might  have a Torque 15, who knows.
I still have a boat horn you blow in,lower tone than a whistle, its an orange tube even.

I'm glad everyone on this site wears the PFD, it's cool to have one.  I always wear mine, it has the coooool pockets for all my sheeeeeot.  I look badass in it too, biker tough yo. I have a cheap "fisherman" nygene bottle for the "legalities".  You know one of those tasty bottles they sell at stores marked Survival, Hunter, Fisherman, etc. in various colors to tempt.  I figure it is avoid a citation in a bottle.  The one marked Fisherman has flashlight, whistle, pliers, band-aids, survival blanket, and a little muti-tool.  I added a lighter, yellow chemlight, two extra AA batteries, asprin, tums, small sowing kit, super glue,  and two airplane size whiskey (medicine that I have to replace alot).  I throw the nygene bottle in whatever craft I'm using as a back-up, like for a buddy who may need to cover some bases.  It by no means replaces the quality white light I deploy, or the super whistle attached to my PFD, or my wicked sharp knife (also attached to PFD), it comes down to basically being a gear horder.  My name is Scott, and I'm a f*ing outdoor gear horder.  Don't even ask how many camp cook sets I own, don't even.

Time to pass the Conch so I can nurse my fav tumbler and the Forty Creek,
