I'm planning on picking up a VHF radio on Amazon. But, does anyone know if the VHF radio will communicate with the standard 2 way radios?

What do you mean by "standard 2 way radios"?  If you're talking about FRS/GMRS radios, then the answer is NO.

I would suggest searching the Safety forum for "VHF", before you buy.  My advice is to get a waterproof, floating unit with MMSI (DSC - Thanks to FFTW).
