Hello, I'm looking for some of the Scotty Rod No.444 flush mount rod holders. I'm trying to rig up a sit-in kayak. The kayak will only be used for fishing at times and it has no room for the rear flush mount tubes. Has anybody ran across these in the Portland area? I would like to see them before I buy. Thanks.

I have 4 of those on my boat they are awesome.  2 years ago I bought a pair from Fisherman's Marine in Oregon City don't know if they still keep them in stock.
It's never too late to start procrastinating.

Fisherman's and Dicks both carry them.  Call ahead to check and see if they have them in stock though.  Whenever I've seen those mounts in those stores there are never more than one or two on the shelf.

Thats what I have been using and is a great mount for general purpose use, however I might make a few suggestions that you may want to consider.

Make sure the plastic is thick where you mount it or that it is in a place that has some structural support around it. otherwise there will be a lot of deflection. I cut out and made a biiiig washer out a piece of 3/8" ABS plastic, that I attached through from underneath, and that helped A-LOT!

Scotties holders pivot in only one plane. If you use the RAM ball mounts you have nearly infinate adjustability to put your rod holder EXACTLY where you want it.

Now I am adding a wedge mount ball into my Scotties flush mount like the one you are looking for. Now I can bring the rod holder back AND turn it sideways.

Thanks for all the quick responses and advise. I had the hopes of being able to make some big plastic spacers under the mounts that match the contour of the kayak. I will make the spacer larger on the inside like the big washer idea.
The kayak will primarily be used for touring then fishing. I like the idea of removing the rod holders and still having sealed storage/bulkheads. Does anybody have experience with how tight the cap on these seal?

Make sure that when you mount these you have a tube of marine goop on hand.  There is a cap that threads on underneath to cap the mounting hole after the mount itself is tightened into place.  When I mounted mine, I gooped the mount so it sealed to the deck.  Then, when the nut was tightened from the underside, I applied a generous amount of goop to the cap before threading it into place.  It seems to have worked really well so far.

I wouldn't worry too much about the Goop since you are mounting it in a Sit In kayak. I used this same mount on 2 of my Sit Ins. Just be sure to put it high enough on your Yak that it is not close to your water line. If you plan on crabbing and are using a Scotty trapeze puller, they due tend to rotate.

I have used the #344 for a flush mount. Any reason for choosing the #444 over #344? I am a rigging newbie and hope I'm not over looking something obvious =) Plus this one can't rotate.

About the only advantage I can think of, and the reason I used the #444's is the smaller diameter to fit in a smaller space that the#344 wouldn't.  Otherwise probably not a big deal either way.

That's a great mounting option, it just takes up a little more deck space since it has a larger diameter.  That one would be preferred if you're planning on mounting a flush-mount onto a large, flat area.  This one will also reduce the amount of flex on the hull surrounding the mount since a larger flange means a greater distribution of force caused by torque.  This mount is a better option if the underside of the hull where the mount is going cannot be reached.  #444 is a threaded deck mount so it requires you to be able to access the underside to screw on the nut underneath.

Regardless of what I'm mounting on my hull, I either grease or goop the hell out of the mounting mechanism.  Whether it's stainless bolts, pop-rivets, or something else.  This ensures longevity and dependability of the mount as well as water-tight integrity of the hull.

I dont have much room behind the cockpit opening and then there appears to be a piece of foam about 3 inches thick. The foam seals the rear bulkhead. After that I have about 3 1/2 inches of flat surface to work with. These are about as big as I can go.  The only thing I don't like about this set-up is that the rod holders will be about 16 inches back. Just a bit of a reach. I will use the holders behind me for a spare rod and net storage. I will also mount one in front of the cockpit.
I think that I may get rocket launcher rod holders for the rear and a bait/spinning rod holder for the front.
